Although China has exerted much influence upon the dress culture of the world throughout its 5,000 years of history, it has lost its fame as a great country of dress with the advent of socialist policy. In addition, with the trend of "Western dress's Eastern penetration" Chinese traditional dress has gradually lost its dominant position. With the advancement of scientific technology and mass communication, modern society has witnessed active cultural exchanges between the Occident and the Orient, thus resulting in a lot of mixed cultural patterns over the length and breadth of culture and art. Orientalism has been only regarded as an interesting thing by the Occident-oriented thought in the past, but it has taken root in Oriental cultural spirits and values on the whole. In this regard, Chinese tastes―that is, the cultural and formative elements presented in Chinese traditional dress culture―arrest public attention again and become popular recently. In the Western world of fashion after the 20th century, such trends as Orientalism and ethnic have played an important role. Having to do with the Western culture since the early years of the 20th century, Orientalism has inspired much imagination and inspiration into both social/cultural/artistic realms and fashion designs. On the basis of the fashion of Orientalism in the early years of the 20th century, the ethnic fashion in the 1970s, and the restorative fashion after the 1990s, Chinese traditional dress culture has had much influence upon the whole world. The ethnic fashion has become weightier in the Oriental world with the consolidation of Japanese economical competitiveness in the 1980s and Chinese open-door policy in the 1990s. Keeping step with this trend, many designers have presented Oriental style dress. Thus, Chinese traditional dress culture exerted influence upon the world and East Asia at the end of the 20th century, becoming a valuable concept for fashion designers to develop modern dress fashions. In this vein, the aim of this study was to historically examine the concepts and contents of Chinese traditional dress culture in detail by classifying it into dress forms, dress patterns, dress colors. and dress textiles. For this, the investigator examined the Chinese looks of Chinese traditional dress reflected on the formative characteristics of its forms, patterns, colors and textiles based on literatures, and then analyzed the Chinese looks of modern fashions based on examples. In addition, the influence of Chinese traditional dress' characteristic elements upon the fashion design of the world was examined through famous world fashion designers' collections. And the influence of Chinese traditional dress' characteristics upon the modern fashion design of East Asian countries, such as China, Korea, and Japan, was analyzed through the examples of designers who playing an active part in the field of design since 2005. Study findings are as follows: First, in relation to forms, such characteristics of qipao―typical Chinese female dress―as mandarin color, oblique-line adjustment, knot button, and tight silhouette were presented abundantly. And as the characteristics of jungsanbok (中山服)―typical Chinese male dress, which is simple but practical, stand-up collar and masculine silhouette image were appeared plentifully. In addition, they also applied the characteristics of mandarin, the dress of the Han race and minority races, and other images to modern Chinese dress. By introducing these forms into modern fashion in a practical/functional/creative manner, they tried to invent a new original image. Second, in relation to patterns, the dragon pattern―the symbol of Chinese Imperial Household that represents wealth and dignity―was used abundantly. Besides, such patterns of tiger, fish, bamboo, bird and flower, grape, apricot tree, cloud, and Buddha appear. Third, in relation to colors, red color―typical Chinese color that symbolizes good luck―was adopted in dress design together with golden-color embroidery, thus giving life to the sense of splendor and elegance. In modern fashion, complementary colors of red are used together, thus presenting stronger images. Fourth, in relation to textiles, shiny silk-like textiles were used in general. And as to the influence of Chinese traditional dress elements upon modern fashion design, fashion-show clothes of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese designers since 2005 were examined, study findings are as follows: First, colors in Korean fashion are simple and dark in general. And simple and practical forms are favored. With the trend of reactionism in the 1990s, ethnic-manner expressions appear in modern Korean fashion. Among such expressions, Chinese-style is most frequently used in textiles, colors, and patterns. Korean designers have presented such dress that is not on the basis of mere borrowing the forms, patterns, and colors of Chinese traditional dress, but on the basis of in-depth understanding and studies on its characteristics. Second, since Chinese designers are able to understand the mental aspect of Chinese traditional dress culture and local culture, their dress design includes both Chinese traditional dress' formative elements and Chinese culture's unique psychological elements. Third, among three East Asian countries, Japan has had most powerful influence upon the modern fashion of the world. By modifying unique Japanese dress on the basis of its modern interpretation, they create new modern dress. They especially include Oriental thought in their design in a philosophic aspect and introduce it into their dress design, thus opening a more advanced and creative world of design. However, since China has an immense territory that goes across the Occident and the Orient, its culture displays the characteristics of fused culture of diverse minority races historically and traditionally. Since cultural exchanges have been historically active among China, Korea, and Japan from early days, many cultural elements of them appear to be fused. In this vein, there exist seemingly no unique Chinese traditional elements. In the 21st century, diverse cultures will coexist and harmonize properly. And through the 2008 Peking Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai Expo, Chinese looks will expectedly achieve a new trend that is different from that of the 20th century. The investigator hopes that more detailed and in-depth studies on the combination of Chinese culture's unique concepts with fashion designs will be actively carried out on the basis of this study's findings in the future.
