The purpose of this study is to provide realistic implications on how to boost individual giving through empirical studies on giving behaviors of individuals that can be the sound basis of the private welfare resources. Based on the previous studies on giving behaviors, three variables such as demo-sociological factor, giving motivation factor, and empirical factor were established, and how they relate to and/or affect giving behaviors of individual givers (prior giving experience and intention to give in the future) have been studied. Study samples include those with giving experience and those without; that is both the givers and the potential givers, and the factors that influence giving behaviors were studied by comparing those two groups.
The Gallup Korea's research study titled, “The 2005 study of Koreans’ volunteer and giving statistics,” commissioned by “Volunteer 21” was primarily studied for this study, and relevant questions were carefully picked from the questionnaire in the Gallup Korea’s study for further analysis. Descriptive Statistics, Factor Analysis, Crosstab, and T-test were utilized for quantitative analysis. Major findings from the analysis are following.
First, statistically significant differences were measured in the demo-sociological factors on giving behaviors such as occupation, educational background, income, marital status, religion, and age. Those with income of four hundred million (4,000,000) wons and those with Graduate degrees had more giving experiences, and married people were found to have given more than singles. Christians and those in their thirties through fifties with active economic activities were found to have given more, too.
In terms of demo-sociological giving experience and giving motivation, those in income brackets of one hundred million wons through one hundred forty nine million wons (1,000,000-1,490,000 wons) and two hundred million wons through two hundred forty nine million wons (2,000,000-2,490,000 wons) showed meaningful differences in previous giving experience and instrumentalism while those in the income brackets of four hundred fifty million wons through four hundred ninety nine million wons (4,500,000-4,990,000 wons) showed meaningful differences in social responsibility. In terms of marital status, married people showed meaningful differences in instrumentalism and religious belief, while only those over sixty in the age groups showed meaningful differences in religious belief. Altruism did not show any meaningful difference any particular category, thus altruism seems to be an important factor in most people’s giving behavior.
Those groups that showed no statistical significance in any variable used in this study are: general workers, general office workers, managerial office workers, and professionals/free lancers in occupation category; associate’s degree holders in educational background category; over two hundred fifty million wons (2,500,000 wons +) in income category; divorced and widowed in marital status category; Catholics in religious belief category; and under fifty in age category. Regarding meaningful differences in giving experiences and empirical characteristics in demo-sociological factors, meaningful differences were observed in all categories, which corresponds to the findings of previous studies on volunteer experience and giving and social learning theory.
Second, in terms of differences in giving based on the reason for giving, statistically significant differences were observed in the categories of “requested by friends or coworkers,” “to give back a portion of privilege I received,” “ to go into a lower tax bracket,” “employer encouraged,” “due to religious belief,” and “to aid in the resolution of social issues.”
Those who have given answered “don’t know” in many categories, indicating the people may not seriously think about why they give. The most frequently picked choices were “instrumentalism” for those without giving experience, and “to give back a portion of privilege I received,” “to aid in the resolution of social issues.” and “due to religious belief” among altruistic factors for those with giving experience. Meaningful differences were observed in “Instrumentalism” and “religious belief” when comparing” those with giving experience” with “those without” for the current giving practice. Meaningful differences were observed in “altruism” and “social responsibility” between those with intention to give in the future and those without.
Third, regarding differences in giving experience in terms of empirical aspects, statistically significant differences were observed in the categories of “group activity,” “social work,” “have seen people with extreme poverty,” “grew up in a poor home,” “hope to see drastic changes in the society,” and” have seen someone they respect give.” Statistically significant differences were observed in the same categories for the difference between those with the current giving experience and those without, and between those with intention to give in the future and those without regarding to the giving motivation. No meaningful differences were observed in the categories of “have been in youth group or something similar,” “have seen people with extreme poverty,” and ” grew up in a poor home” between those with intention to give in the future and those without.
Suggestions on how to boost individual giving based on the quantitative analysis in this study are following.
First, more specific and empirical studies are necessary to secure regular individual givers. Previous studies on giving motivation do not follow consistent measurement methods, thus releasing inconsistent and/or opposite results by organizing questionnaire differently. More specific and standardized studies must be done and consequent studies must be followed.
Second, more choices and easier access to giving must be established. Also, easier access to giving procedures and methods must be introduced. In other words, a shift in the giving paradigm must be made from a uniform giving standard to a customized giving strategy.
Third, more aggressive and various efforts for publicity must be made. A change of concept in giving to that of fun and natural giving will contribute to spread and settlement of giving culture.
Forth, tax laws that regulate giving must be reformed. A support system on a national level will contribute greatly in promoting social atmosphere that encourages giving.
Fifth, more studies on people without giving experience must be done. Since most quantitative findings of this study were based on previous researches, insufficient data on potential givers has created limitations of this study. Therefore, more systematic and in-depth subsequent studies are necessary.
