This study examined 39 fictions that talk about the 5·18 Civil Resistance, with emphasis on the significance of texts and forms of discourse. Most of these fictions remember the historical event of '5·18' to discuss how this event affects us today. This study classified the fictions into realization of history or memory, expression of guilt, and treatment of trauma to analyze how the lyrical place of Gwangju is described in modern Korean fictions. Chapter Ⅱ discussed 「Rising Land」, 「Flags」, 『Spring Day』, and 『Their Dawn』, the fictions which closely depict the tragic world that should not have existed and make us imagine the world that should exist beyond the reality. In result, it was found that the tragic event of Gwangju was not coincidental, but had historical relations; and the regeneration of many people's memories takes the tragedy beyond distortion and alteration. Chapter Ⅲ discussed 「The Face」, 「Night Path」, 「Road to Gwangju」, and 『Who Is This Person』 for the sense of guilt and self-awareness of people who are trapped between the mission to discover the concealed truth and the reality that keeps them away from the truth. These ‘5·18 Fictions’ depict people who are suffering from the sense of guilt and helplessness because they cannot exploring the truth. The ‘5·18’ event leaves unwashable sense of guilt and shame to many people that have existed in this land. Chapter Ⅳ discussed 「A Penal Falls without a Sound」, 「A Women Coming Back from Far Away」, 『Wilderness』, and 『The Smile of May』 for the treatment and relief of trauma. The memory that is remembered in the form of conscience stimulates ethics and sense of responsibility of our lives and focuses us on the past in the degenerative action. The observation of the trauma in May and how to treat it requires authors to undergo the pain and sense of guilt, which the characters go through in the fictions. Chapter Ⅴ analyzed how ‘Gwangju’ was signified and symbolized in all of the above novels. In result, it was found that Gwangju has been signified as the tragic space of massacre and fear or as the space of communication and response. This study found that there are many fictions that discuss the truth of ‘5·18’ in various aspects. Some fictions express authors' subjective emotions based on the idea that the concealed truth of the 5·18 Civil Resistance must be discovered and on their experiences. Nevertheless, these fictions have contributed to making the historical meaning of this event significant even today. Passionate writers who have endured the process of ‘remembering’ have made it possible. It is expected that the ‘5·18 Fictions’ in the future shall use the achievements of preceded and fictions create more depictive stories of the spirits that stood by human dignity even in the violence of the 5·18 Civil Resistance.
