The purpose of this study is to suggest an appropriate direction of the Korean human rights education by analyzing the contents of the current human right education in high school social studies textbooks. In order to achieve such goal, the study was conducted in the order as follows. First, I examined some theories of human rights and human rights education, and defined why the human rights education must be carried out as a part of social studies. Second, as preliminaries to the analysis of the human rights education, I selected which objects to analyze and how to perform the analysis. In addition, I developed the two sets of criteria such as 'human rights categories' and 'human rights education content areas' for the analysis. Third, I developed an objectivity by quantitatively analysing the contents of human rights education in such courses of high school social studies as 'Law and Society', 'Politics', 'Economics', and 'Society and Culture'. In order to make up for the weak points in the quantitative analysis, I inquired into the contents described in the textbooks from the point of view of human rights. Fourth, I discussed the result of the analysis in positive and negative sides, and tried to find out ways that should be done to make sure our human rights education could be on the right track. The followings are the major study results from the analysis. First of all, in the aspect of quantity, 'Economics' teaches less about human rights than other subjects. It suggests that students who choose economics as their specialty would have little chance to experience human rights education. Second, while 'Law and Society' and 'Politics' deal with a wide variety of human rights items, 'Economics' is composed of several human rights items. Third, in those all four courses of social studies, 'civil and political rights' among the categories of human rights is given a greatest deal of weight by 46.79%. Although the five categories of human rights are necessary for the dignity of human being, the current social studies textbooks mainly deal with 'civil and political rights' only. Fourth, in those all courses of social studies, 'knowledge' is given weight more than other human rights content areas, accounting for 62.45%. It suggests that human rights education is 'knowledge'-oriented, so it might be difficult to achieve goals in 'values and attitudes', and 'citizen action'. Fifth, in case of 'Politics', it presents specific and various ways of participation which we can practice in our daily life. This is expected to contribute to raising a human rights-friendly inclination. Sixth, the study showed that 'Politics' and 'Society and Culture' reflect 'knowledge', 'skills', 'values and attitudes', and 'citizen action' areas relatively fairly. This suggests possibilities for effective human rights education through political studies, and social and cultural studies. On the other side, 'Economics' lacks much in the 'skills' and 'citizen action' areas, thus it is expected to be difficult to achieve the objectives of human rights education synthetically. Seventh, as a result of analysis on descriptions and illustrations of the textbooks from the point of view of human rights, it was found that biased views, fixed ideas, and one sided points of view are reflected throughout the 'Economics' and 'Society and Culture' textbooks. Eighth, those all four courses of social studies are composed of the contents for 'education about human rights'. Also, they make effective human rights education possible by approaching the actual conditions of human rights education. If the following suggestions are considered, social studies could be the subject for the integrated and systematic human rights education. First, when the contents of the textbook are selected, various human rights items should be considered fairly enough, so that students extend the meaning of human rights and become aware of the fact that every area of life is related to human rights. Second, to achieve the objectives of human rights education, such four areas as 'knowledge', 'skills', 'values and attitudes', and 'citizen action' should be emphasized all together. If it is not applied in real life, human rights education would end up with the dead knowledge by the cramming system of education. Therefore, education should be carried out to make students behave according to the fundamental principles of human rights. Third, when the contents of the textbook are selected, it should be approached in the point of view that everyone is the subject of human rights, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age, or class. All prejudices and fixed ideas should be broken. Also, the diversity of life should be revealed. Fourth, because 'Law and Society', 'Politics', 'Economics', and 'Society and Culture' all share the common objective to develop the understanding of all the students for humanity, 'human rights' should be viewed as a very important issue in all social studies. When the contents of the textbook are organized, we should hold on to the idea of human rights. Besides, when organized, the contents of social studies textbooks should involve from personal to macroscopic structure. Daily experience of students is important as a learning material. In globalization, information-oriented and multi-cultural society, it is important to build an attitude of moving toward universal human rights. If the human rights educations is reorganized based on these improvements, more practical and more systematic human rights education could be carried out. And human rights education in social studies curriculum will be much more advanced.
