This study classified the patterns of failure factors of solubility-related problem solving through analysing the process of problem solving in the science test intended for 39 eighth-graders and having individual interviews with each student. This paper ultimately aims for identifying the causes of students' failing to solve solubility-related questions by not only comparing the percentage of correct answers with that of incorrect answers based on cognitive power but also analyzing question-and-answer ratios based on scientific thinking power and previous science marks. In this study SRTⅡ was used to examine the cognition level of students and students were given newly-developed questions made for getting hold of the causes of students' failing to answer solubilty-related questions. The results of this study show that students try to solve the same question in various other ways. Because the students having no fundamental background knowledge (which is essential to understanding solubility) such as solvent, solute, solution, cooling, eduction, and saturation had difficulty understanding the solubility-related problem itself, they could hardly gain access to understanding solubility graph or proportional logic that requires scientific thinking power. In the end they came down to answering none of the questions, which resulted in making students think of science as a difficult subject and surrender it. This vicious cycle came down to students' making a bad record in science as a duck takes to water. Students with scientific thinking power and schemata concerned with solubility, however, approached the given questions properly and could finally find out the answers to them. And students(3A) possessing a higher cognitive level also could answer them to the point even though they had got bad grades in science. Three out of five high cognitive level students produced all the information requested by the newly-developed questions made for finding out the causes of students' failing to answer solubility-related questions. But it was shown that low cognitive level students(2A) lack both thinking power and sufficient background knowledge and are unable to activate this knowledge, which made them solve none of the given questions. It was found that the lower cognitive level and the more deficient background knowledge students possess, the lower grades they get in science. Accordingly it can be safely said that background knowledge and scientific thinking power interrelate closely with students' academic achievement. As a result, teachers need to help low cognitive level students to build students' background information for better academic achievement at the beginning part of class and simultaneously to extend their thinking power by gluing new knowledge onto existing knowledge in a logical way.
