(Social Skills Rating System- Teacher Form Elementary Level: ...

The group Play Therapy Decreaing for behavior Problem of Children With Mental Retardation SEO, SUNG SUK Major in play therapy Dept. of Child Psychology Therapy The Graduate School of School Education, Myong Ji University The purpose of this study is to see the reduction of behavior problems of mentally retarded children through Group Play Therapy. The subjects of this study are as follows. 1. Whether Group Play Therapy reduces the behavior problems of mentally retarded children? 2. If the answer to the first subject is yes, then which area reflects the distinguished effect of Group Play Therapy among those behavior problems; externalized behavior problem, internalized behavior problem, or hyperactivity distinguished decline? This study was conducted In P welfare facility located in Song-pa, Seoul, and four (2 males and 2 females) of category 3 mentally retarded children, who have participated in social development program there, were subject to this study. It was carried out by means of Group Play Therapy in a social development program room for 90 minutes from January to April 2006, total 12 sessions. One session was conducted by following order: snack, free play, relaxation activity, game play therapy, and discussion. To see the fruit of the program, I analyzed my observations by audio-taped record in every session. Also I selected a standard of behavior from Social Skills Rating System(1990) by Gresham and Elliott, which is standardized test method in the United States and have the parent written out the forms (Appendix X). To summarize this study, I have concluded as follows. First, Group Play Therapy has positive effects to reduce mentally retarded children's behavior problem. First, this study shows Group Play Therapy has positive effects to reduce mentally retarded children's behavior problem. Second, it is more effective for the area of hyperactivity, which is one of the subordinate elements of mentally retarded children. Second, this study shows that it is more effective for the area of hyperactivity, which is one of the subordinate elements of mentally retarded children Moreover, by externalizing the internalized issues, Group Play Therapy is effective for expressing children's unspoken psychological difficulties. Considering mentally retarded children can voluntarily participate in the program with interest, Group Play Therapy can be utilized more effectively for understanding the children and for prevention and cure of the problem. There were some limitations with this study. A session was rather short; there was no subsequent program after this program; and parents education after the program was insufficient. Despite the limitation, we have seen the positive effects of Group Play Therapy on mentally retarded children in this paper. Therefore, Group Play Therapy will be helpful for reducing the behavior problems as well as for prevention if we use this method with modified and supplemented programs in accordance with the special characters of a respective mentally retarded child.
