Memory has been a prerequisite for education so that the researches and discussions regarding memory have been closely related to the explanation of the fundamental foundations of educational activities. Recently, thanks to the development of the researches on brain science, the effects of brain science-oriented interpretations for memory have been gradually larger. In particular, long term potentiation(hereunder, LTP) of hippocampus has been considered crucial as one of the most important mechanisms in the process of forming long-term memory. In this regard, the attempts to interpret it from the educational perspective would be highly meaningful as to the memory used in educational activities. Therefore, this study was aimed to have an understanding of the research findings of brain science for the LTP phenomenon of hippocampus, to interpret them in educational aspects and to deduce a meaningful suggestion in the formation process of long-term memory for educational content. This also attempted to contribute to the recognition of possibilities in which the research findings of brain science for memory could be discussed in a more meaningful way in educational contexts. The hippocampus has played a role in receiving various sense organs and processing them appropriately and forming them as long-term memory through active interactions with other brain parts. It has been an LTP phenomenon that took place in the process of forming such long-term memory. The LTP phenomenon signified a continuous condition, in which data transmission efficiency among synapses was high with the responses of a neurotransmitter called glutamate, AMPA receptors of dendrite and NMDA receptors. Such an LTP phenomenon showed the following three characteristics: cooperativeness, in which the LTP took place more effectively in simultaneous stimuli through various related paths of synapses than a single path of synapse stimuli; uniqueness that the LTP took place only in specific synapse paths related to stimuli; and correlation with emotional responses. From the said results, some educational suggestions could be made as below. First, it was about the importance of the provision of structured information. In order to create the LTP phenomenon, it would be more effective when the simultaneous input of various data connected rather than that of single data was done cooperatively. Namely, data and their correlation between contents needed to be more effectively and easily organized and recognized than their simple arrangement to make contributions to the formation of long-term memory. Second, it has something to do with the importance of the application of appropriate sense stimuli. The hippocampus arranged the contents needed among a variety of sense stimuli; then, it processed them properly through active interactions with other brain parts, eventually storing them as long-term memory. In this regard, it would be important to utilize various sense stimuli related to educational data so as for them to be connected with each other meaningfully and to enable people to form vivid and three-dimensional memory rather than the sporadic stimuli of single data. Third, it would be important to enhance positive emotions. The positive emotions would make contributions to the formation of more effective long-term memory by improving the efficiency of the LTP phenomenon of hippocampus. In order to do so, it would be crucial to provide people with the experiences of positive emotions. This could lead to various positive emotions as well as the interests of learners for educational activities, enabling them to form inner motives, have more active participation attitudes and quest activities and augment the efficiency of the LTP phenomenon. Furthermore, in case that learners experience successful learning outcome based on the said elements, there will be some favorable emotional responses such as a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and confidence and subsequent positive impacts on educational activities. Such educational suggestions will provide learners with important data that can effectively promote their long-term memory formation process for educationally valuable contents. The discussions concerning the formation of long-term memory should not be limited to the simple memorization of educational contents, but include an understanding of the contents and can eventually be connected with the manifestation of creative and high-dimensional thinking ability. It is expected that there will be further researches from educational perspective on the findings of brain science that will be advanced gradually in the future.
