Changes of the human right conditions in the military organization are slower than requested by the society, and as sensual, impulsive and egoistic new-generation youngsters join the military organization, the social request for a new culture of the military organization is more intense. The purpose of this study is to understand new-generation soldiers' traits, analyze the relations between their personal traits of mal-adaptation to the military life and relevant accidents during their military life, examine the causes of human right infringement in the military organization and thereupon, explore the ways to practice the military social welfare.
For this purpose, the following study points were set up; first, what are the personal traits causing maladaptation to the military life?; second, will it be possible to organize a joint civilian/public/military team to provide for an integrated solution to the soldiers suffering from psychological and social maladaptation to their military life?; what are the effective ways to command and lead the soldiers maladaptive to their military life? In order to find the answers to the above questions, relevant literature was reviewed and thereupon, a questionnaire survey was conducted on the human right conditions in the military organization.
For the questionnaire survey, 480 soldiers were sampled from 9 military camps in front and rear regions. Excluding 19 responses deemed not serious, 461 ones were used for analysis. The data collected from the survey were processed for frequency analysis, tabulation, correlation and regression analyses. In addition, if the soldiers supervised by the researcher appealed for somatization disorder or short-term depression, the researcher interviewed them and conducted a psychological test to measure their maladaptation to their military life and then, observed their behavioral changes affected by researcher's solution.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows;
First, the personal traits causing soldiers' maladaptation to their military life were identified as negative image of the military organization formed before their military life, conflict between assignment and aptitude, and such socio-psychological problems as stress, anxiety and depression. Namely, most of the new-generation soldiers had joined the military organization, harboring a negative image of it, and thus, they were just filling in time for their assignments unwillingly rather than living their military life positively, and therefore, were more and more maladapted to their military life. And it was also confirmed that their stress from their military life would develop into depression and anxiety affecting their military service morale negatively.
Second, despite the multi-faced efforts to prevent accidents in the military camps, our soldiers' human rights were being infringed upon in such forms as senior soldiers' unfair order, instruction, interference, physical assault and abuse, verbal violence, violation of top 5 absolute prohibitions, coercion on privacy, etc.
Third, as a result of examining the behavioral changes of the maladapting soldiers supervised by the researcher to develop a joint civil/public/military solution for them, it was found that it would be necessary to identify their socio-psychological problems at the earlier stage of their military life, diagnose the factors causing their maladaptation to their military life through counselling activities associated with their families and thereby, mobilize all services available (civilian psychological counsellors, military medical staff, military religious officers, dispatched military police, community welfare facilities, etc.) to treat their problems fundamentally and recover their self-esteem.
Fourth, it was deemed essential to command and lead the maladapting soldiers in a reasonable and effective way. Specifically, it was deemed necessary to introduce a system identifying and managing the maladapting soldiers rather than intervene in them unconditionally. And it was also necessary to establish a culture of military camp for mutual respect and consideration, based on clinical experiences to relieve commanders of their burden for management of the soldiers. In a nutshell, in order to command and lead the maladapting soldiers in a reasonable and effective ways, it was deemed essential to create a military culture respecting and considering each other, being reawakened of the military life. In particular, it was deemed desirable for the military officers to use efficient interview techniques and take timely measures for the soldiers maladaptive to their military life.
Based on the above results of this study, the researcher suggested the following ways for practice of the military social welfare: Bringing up of professional military social welfare officers, establishment and operation of a civilian professional counsellor system, activation of the researches into new ways to command and lead the soldiers to create a mutually respecting and considering military camp culture from a new and open perspective, and the like.
