The purpose of this study is to examine the problems the instructors face when project approach is applied to elementary school field and find out the solutions. Examining the problems and solutions will present the teachers the actual help and contribute to project approach to spread throughout our elementary school field. The research theme is to investigate the problem of each stage of project approach when applied to the elementary school field and look for solutions to each problem. The research was implemented from September, 2006 to June, 2007. Conducting the project twice, data were collected through journal, parent interview and other documents, and analyzed. 30 elementary school teachers who have conducted project approach were selected as intervewees among 45 teachers who received 45 hour lesson on project approach. Data collected with in depth interview and open-ended·closed questionnaire were analyzed. Results are as follows. First, at a preparatory stage, teachers mostly had hard times selecting themes that balance between reflection of national curriculum and concerns for children's interests and experiences. It is suggested that teachers not only win the sympathy of students through a preliminary project, but also thoughtfully watch what their children are interested in. Moreover, curriculum should thoroughly be analyzed, and standards for selecting themes should be settled. Second, problems found at a beginning stage are that teachers had not enough time to analyze and reconstruct curriculum, it was hard to run curriculum by class units, and curriculum is forcefully integrated to secure teaching hours. The solutions are standardization and simplification of duty, the introduction of exclusive teaching system for teacher, and teacher training. Third, it was found that the problems at a developing stage were lack of teachers' understanding of documentation, shortage of time to document and of subsidiary tools. It is suggested that we need to organize a expert team, use student helpers, and consider several methods to document and use subsidiary tools. Forth, the last stage's problem was to invite parents to an exhibition at class and its solution could be to make parents to take part in by linking the exhibition to school events, and carry out various types of exhibition. Consequently, to make the best of project approach in elementary school field, it is required for teachers to fully understand the method and perform active roles by enthusiastically struggling and preparing.
