The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group counseling through role play on elementary students’ interpersonal relationship, and for this purpose, hypotheses were formulated as follows: Hypothesis 1: Self‐awareness, a sub‐area of interpersonal relationship, will be higher in the experimental group to which role play group counseling was applied than in the control group. Hypothesis 2: Other‐awareness, a sub‐area of interpersonal relationship, will be higher in the experimental group to which role play group counseling was applied than in the control group. Hypothesis 3: Satisfaction with interpersonal relationship, a sub‐area of interpersonal relationship, will be higher in the experimental group to which role play group counseling was applied than in the control group. In order to test these hypotheses, we selected 22 children out of sixth graders at W Elementary School at Nam‐gu, Ulsan‐city, and divided them into an experimental group (n=11) and a control group (n=11). The experimental group had role‐play‐based group counseling two sessions a week and a total of 10 sessions. The tool used in this study was interpersonal relationship scale developed by Eun Hyeok‐Gi (1999). Collected data were analyzed through ANCOVA and significance was determined based on p< .05. The results of this study are as follows: First, group counseling through role play was not effective in improving self‐awareness, a sub‐area of interpersonal relationship. Second, group counseling through role play was effective in improving other‐awareness, a sub‐area of interpersonal relationship. Third, group counseling through role play was effective in improving satisfaction with interpersonal relationship, a sub‐area of interpersonal relationship.
