Endosulfan (6,7,8,9,10,10-hexachloro-1,5,5a,6,9,9a-hexahydro-6,9-methano-2,3,4-benzodioxathiepine-3-oxide) is an organochlorine insecticide that has been used extensively for control of sucking, chewing and boring insects and mites on a wide range of crops since its introduction in the 1950's. Now, endosulfan is widely considered to be a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP) but was not included in the POP lists of the Stockholm Convention. Worldwide use of endosulfan increases with the ban/restriction in use of the more persistent organochlorine pesticides like DDT. Endosulfan has a high toxicity for fish and snail, so there are many reports for the international misuse of endosulfan caused killing fish and snails. Endosulfan sulfate, a major metabolite of oxidation in soil environment, also has a high toxicity as much as endosulfan, and it has a longer half-life than that of the parent compound, endosulfan. Endosulfan is seriously concerned about plant and soil residue problems with increasing its use. This studies investigated the removal methods of endosulfan in soils by the chemical approaches such as Fenton reaction (oxidative method), Ca(OH)2 treatment (hydrolysis method), and ZVI reaction (reductive methods), for the remediation of soil contaminated with endosulfan along with elucidation of its mechanisms. For investigating the fate and behavior of endosulfan in soil environment, endosulfan residues of the orchard and upland soils in Gyeongbuk and Daegu region were determined, and the degradation of endosulfan in the clay loam soil was observed in laboratory experiment. In results of endosulfan residues in the soils of the orchard and upland field in Gyeongbuk and Daegu region, endosulfan was detected to be a range of 0.24~10.54 mg/kg. In laboratory experiment, α and β-endosulfan were degraded in non-sterilized clay loam soil, and their half-lives were estimated to be α-endosulfan 27.7, β-endosulfan 125.7 day, respectively. Endosulfan sulfate, a major metabolite of endosulfan in the soil and plant, was generated after 3 day and it was increased in proportion to the degradation of endosulfan. This result showed that it was necessary to remove endosulfan rapidly before generating endosulfan sulfate or to remove endosulfan sulfate directly. The first study applied Fenton's reaction as oxidative treatment to remove endosulfans. Endosulfan and its metabolite were very rapidly degraded by Fenton's reagent. When Fe(NO3)3 and H2O2 were treated with as Fenton's reagent, half-lives of 2 ppm endosulfan and its metabolites were estimated to be α-endosulfan 4.0, β-endosulfan 3.2, endosulfan diol 2.7, endosulfan ether 1.9, and endosulfan lactone 8.6 hours, respectively. Endosulfan sulfate, however, was not degraded by Fenton reagent. So it was necessary to find the other method for the direct removal of endosulfan sulfate. The reaction products of endosulfan by Fenton reaction were detected in GC-chromatogram and they were identified with GC-MS as endosulfan hydroxyether, dechlorinated endosulfan lactone. It was assumed that the degradation of endosulfan by Fenton reaction initiates the break of sulfur trioxide ring (benzodioxathiepine-3-oxide) in endosulfan by OH radical attack, and this reaction transforms endosulfan to endosulfan diol. And then it continually received by oxidation or dechlorination reaction. So the degradation pathway of endosulfan by Fenton reaction was guessed that endosulfan was degraded via endosulfan diol and hydroxyether and finally formed dechlorinated endosulfan lactone. The second study was treatment of the lime into soil for inducing the hydrolysis of endosulfan. Endosulfan is well known that it is easily hydrolysis in the alkaline condition. So the lime treatment was applied as chemical treatment for the remediation of the soil contaminated with endosulfan. In aqueous condition, endosulfan was hydrolyzed over the pH 9.0. For removing endosulfan in soil, calcium hydroxide was used. The more calcium hydroxide was added into soil, the more endosulfan was degraded. The 1% calcium hydroxide treatment of soil weight made increase soil pH over 9.0 and very effectively degraded endosulfan. The amount of added water also affected the degradation of endosulfan in soil with calcium hydroxide. After treatment of calcium hydroxide in soil with endosulfan, endosulfan diol was produced as a chemical hydrolysis product of α and β-endosulfan. Half-lives of endosulfan in the clay loam soil by calcium hydroxide were estimated to be α-endosulfan 4.9, β-endosulfan 5.3 day, respectively. Endosulfan sulfate, however, was hardly degraded by calcium hydroxide. The final study reported how ZVI remediates the water and soil contaminated by endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate. In the buffer solution, the lower solution pH and higher amounts of ZVI had the higher efficiency for the degradation of endosulfan by ZVI. In the pH 3.0 citrate-phosphate buffer solution, α and β-endosulfan, endosulfan sulfate, endosulfan ether, endosulfan lactone were rapidly degraded by ZVI at initial 5 hour, and latter then they reached the equilibrium. The degradation rates of endosulfans by ZVI were rapid in order of endosulfan sulfate>α-endosulfan>β-endosulfan>endosulfan lactone>endosulfan ether, and their final degradation percentage for 24 hour were α-endosulfan 75, β-endosulfan 49, endosulfan sulfate 91, endosulfan ether 40, endosulfan lactone 51%, respectively. The solution pH and Fe ion concentration were increased and solution Eh was decreased by ZVI, and their change patterns were corresponded with the degradation patterns of endosulfans. So, it was concluded that the degradation rates of endosulfans by ZVI depend on the dissociation rates of Fe. In the ZVI reaction on α-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate, unknown two peaks, which were probably produced by ZVI, were detected in front of the parent compound peak in the GC-ECD chromatogram analysis, respectively. As a result of GC-MS analysis of these peaks, they were guessed to be structural isomers substituted one chlorine to hydrogen, respectively. So it was concluded that ZVI reaction on endosulfan produced two types of one-dechlorinated endosulfan isomers. The effect of various salts on the degradation of endosulfan by ZVI was investigated. All of treated salts improved the degradation of endosulfan by ZVI and especially the maximum degradation of endosulfan was obtained at FeCl3 salt solution. Cations in the salts affected initial pH and Eh of solution, and it may affect the initial degradation rate of endosulfans by ZVI. Anions in the salts also improved the ZVI reaction. Halogen ion was well-known to improve the ZVI reaction because of its ability on erosion of Fe. It was thought that the use of various salt was very favorable to remove the endosulfan with ZVI. ZVI reaction was applied to the slurry soil for removing endosulfan in soil. In treatment with 2% nanosized and powder ZVI into the slurry soil, α-endosulfan was degraded to 75% by nanosized ZVI and 18 % by powder ZVI for 48 hour, respectively. It shows that ZVI treatment on the slurry soil was available to remediate the soil contaminated with endosulfan. These studies applied the chemical treatment to remediated the soil contaminated with endosulfan. α and β-Endosulfan could be rapidly removed by the Fenton reaction (oxidative method) and calcium hydroxide (hydrolysis). However, these treatments could not degrade endosulfan sulfate, major metabolites in soil environment, so it was necessary to find the other method for the removal of endosulfan sulfate. ZVI treatment was applied as reductive method to remove endosulfan sulfate in soil, and it could very effectively degrade endosulfan sulfate in solution and soil environment. If these three treatments were properly used, they were estimated to be very effective methods to remediate the soils contaminated with endosulfan and its metabolites.
