This study investigated on the factors that influence in choosing a dental hospital. This study aslo looked into various factors depending on the patient's age, past dental experience(first time/ second time visit) and their income. Factors were organized by importance and those were also further investigated to identify any relationship with re-visiting the hospital. Three dental school hospitals in a similar environment were compared in this study. Survey data of patients who visited 3 dental school hospitals in Seoul from 2008 Oct. 22nd to 2008 were collected. 250,000 and 150 survey were given out to hospital A, B and C repectively. Out of 600 surveys only 490 surveys were selected and the rest were thrown away because it was doubted to be unfaithful. Regression method was used and the data were analyzed using the SPSS version 15.0, by frequency, factor, reliability, diversity and correlation. This is a summary of the result. First, the demographical analysis result showed a higher percentage of women patients in all three hospitals and patients in the 20-30s who lives in Seoul and graduated from college with a job were the most common patients. Re-visiting patients were also very common and their average income were either less than 1,000,000won a month or somewhere between 2,000,000-3,000,000won a month. Second, great deal of patients visited the prosthodontic department in hospital A, conservative / periodontic department in hospital B and oral surgery department in hospital C. Third, the motive of visiting the hospital were analyzed and the results were caries treatment in hospital A, periodontal tissue management in hospital B, and orthodontic treatment in hospital C. Forth, most of the past dental experience were caries treatment in hospital A, C and periodontal tissue treatment(scaling) in hospital B. Fifth, the most satisfied treatment that patients got were caries treatment in hospital A, periodontal tissue treatment (Scaling) in hospital B and orthodontic treatment in hospital C. The reason for satisfaction were ‘Specialty of the dentist’. Sixth, medical service and recognition of the hospital factor were considered significantly different depending on the age group. Medical service factor depended on the amount of waiting time for treatment, payment and night/ Saturday consulting hours. Recognition of the hospital factor were affected by the dentist's profile, new technology, popularity, contribution to the local society. Seventh, in choosing a hospital, only the medical service played a role as the past hospital experience. Friendliness of the staff, concern toward the patients and a prompt response to the complaints of patients affected the medical service factor and these three variables played a bigger role to first time visitors than the second time visitors. Eighth, the income factor in choosing a hospital seemed to show significant difference in all four factors. Especially the reliability of the doctor, cooperation between the doctors, and waiting time for the treatment affected the medical service factor. Prompt responses to the complaints from patients were the only significant factor in the service factor. Parking space, hospital facilities and environment affected the physical service factor. And in most of the category, the doctor's profile, new technology, popular doctors, reputation of the hospital and popularity were significant in recognition of the hospital factor. Ninth, for each hospital, factors that influenced in choosing a hospital didn't show any differences in statistical analysis. Tenth, the most important factor in choosing a hospital did not affect much in choosing to re-visit hospital. In conclusion, there was a statistical difference in factors for choosing a hospital between age groups of under 20, 40s, 60s and over and also between different income groups. Therefore, differentiating the marketing point for each age group, past experience, and income group is necessary for hospital management. According to the study results, between each hospital there were no difference in factors for choosing a hospital. Since all the hospitals that were used in this study were university hospitals, some results agree with the previous study results on this subject but also some results don't agree with them.
