Music appreciation is the most basic element of musical activity, and many music educators consider that the main goal of music teaching is to cultivate keen appreciation. Appreciation means to listen to music carefully and to think and to perceive and to respond to the characteristics of the expressive elements which comprise the qualities embedded in the music. While remaining faithful to its original goal, the enhancement of music appreciation, Gordon's music learning theory focuses on the explanation of the music learning process itself. According to his music learning theory, when people fully understand all that is involved in creating music, then they could develop a true appreciation of the music they are hearing. In order to acquire sound music appreciation skill, efficient teaching methods are required. Gordon's music teaching method, which pursues the development of musical ability, is an appropriate methodology and should be utilized in conjunction with various other music instruction measures in school or in the general music teaching field. Gordon's music learning theory has its origin in "Audiation" which takes place when we hear and comprehend music for which the sound is no longer or may never have been present. Audiation is not the same as aural perception or imitation, which occurs simultaneously with the reception of sound through the ears. It is to guess what comes next based on what I has been heard. That is, to be able to audiate is the same as to be empowered to understand music, and this understanding is the foundation of music appreciation, the ultimate goal of music teaching. Therefore, this study presents a music appreciation teaching method by which Gordon's music learning theory is adopted. Therefore, it lays emphasis on the development of students' Audiation ability and on the enhancement of their learning efficiency. The first part of this study is to research with reference to the related literature, the role and function of Audiation, which is the core concept of Gordon's instruction and music appreciation method. The main body of the study analyzes the Revised Plan of the Seventh National Curriculum for 3rd Grade Elementary School, in terms of Gordon's method. Music appreciation classes for Audiation development are laid out. Teaching-learning schedules are classified by musical subject and contents. The way in which this can be applied to practical classes are presented. Five western tunes selected from the music appreciation materials designated for 3rd grade are used in order to encourage students to express their creativity through the five fundamental elements of music appreciation: beat, space, body expression, facial expression, and movement. My study concludes that the musical appreciation activities utilized by Gordon's theory are very likely to enhance student's musical appreciation. Through developing audiation skills, students are expected to understand and feel the music more directly, and to express their musical feelings more ably. Also, by learning in terms of Gordon's method, students demonstrate a greater interest in music, and show a more pro-active attitude toward music appreciation activities.
