The study has planed to provide substantial support for preschool children who supposed to enter an elementary school as well as their parents in order to accommodate school life. Hence, the objectives of this study were to verify whether 'Filial Therapy' can improve a parenting efficacy for securing children's emotion and for preventing children's behavioral problem with using a control group by pre-post test design. Moreover, the study was to analyze change of children's behaviors and mother's responses during the process of filial therapy descriptively. The subject of this study was composed of 30 preschool children who supposed to enter an elementary school and their mothers at kindergartens located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Among them, 14 mothers were assigned as an experimental group and the rest of 16 mothers were assigned with controlling group. The Filial Therapy was executed for 12 weeks and consisted of the parental instruction for 2 hours and mother-children free play session for 45 minutes every week. The process of parental instruction was that parent understand in the overall principles and methodology of child-centered play therapy by way of rehearsal, modeling, role-playing, and video-feedback, while mother-children play session was that parent exercise activities of major interactive strategy between mother and children in free play situation. The instruments used for this study were Parenting Efficacy Scale, K-CBCL(Korean Child Behavior Check List), HTP test, and NAP(Nova Assessment of Psychotherapy) Play Therapy Scale. In addition to qualitative analysis, this analysis was utilized by Assessment model of Parent-Children Interaction in free play situation to examine the changes of Parent-children interaction in pre-post filial play therapy. The data were analyzed with frequency analysis, t-test, ANCOVA in SPSS 13.0 Windows program. The results obtained were as follows; 1. In the intervention group, there were significantly increased in negative list of verbal code and positive list of nonverbal code on the children's behavior. However, there were significantly decreased in responses to transmit information such as inquiry, suggestion, and request, on the mother's response. 2. In the intervention group, there were fewer changes on the children's behavioral problems and their mother's parenting efficacy. 3. In the invention group, there were highly positive changes on the children's emotional security and adjustment. Especially, there were significantly decreased in the children's depression, anxiety, alienation, and low self-esteem. 4. In the process of filial play therapy, there were highly increased in verbal codes such as argument, negative emotional expression, and swagger as well as nonverbal code such as positive emotional expression on the children's behavior at the 8 session, then decreased at the final session. On the other hand, there was highly increased in reflection on children's conduct, but decreased in inquiry, suggestion, and request at the 5 session on the mother's responses. The condition of mother's responses which is described in the 5 session was keep up to the final session. 5. In the process of filial therapy, the frequency of coded mother's responses was higher than the children's behaviors one at the 1 session. However, the frequency of coded in children's behaviors versus mother's reponses were changed to 3:2 rate in the middle of session. The result was conformed to the frequency rate of coded children's behaviors versus therapist's responses accordingly. In conclusions, this study implies that changes of children's behavior in analysis of filial play therapy was similar to those of children's behavior in analysis of child-centered play therapy. Although mothers who were trained as therapeutic agents for their children were insufficient in empathic response and communicational skills of professional play therapists, keeping mother's trust of child's self-guided ability and mother's attitudes of acceptance, allowance to their children had therapeutic effects similar to those of professional play therapist.
