This study investigates to analyze the learning process in order for students to better connect the graphic representations of quadratic function with its symbolic representations by teaching quadratic function through the graph. Also the study aims at providing the practical information on the teaching method of quadratic function by analyzing the process of solving a translation task between the graphic representations of quadratic function and its symbolic representations through a clinical interview. To achieve these goals, the hypothesis are proposed as below. 1. What aspects does the learning process of quadratic function by the multiplication of linear function have in order to connect the graphic representations of quadratic function with its symbolic representations? (1) What are the aspects of hypothetic learning process in order to learn quadratic function by the multiplication of linear function using the graphic representations? (2) What are the features of leaning process in the elements of content research? 2. What are the aspects in the connection process accompanied by how to access the graphic representations in the process of solving a translation task between the graphic representations of quadratic function and its symbolic representations? (1) What aspects does the connection process in terms of punctual and topical access to the graph have? (2) What are the features of connecting process of overall access to graph? (3) What are the aspects in the connection process accompanied by integrating punctual and topical access into overall access to the graph? For the hypothesis 1, the researcher did the literature survey and the experiment with the 20 subjects of second grade high school students proposing the hypothetic learning process. In the experiment, the researcher acted as a participant videotaping and transcribing the teaching-learning process and collected the data such as worksheet, interview, or journals in the process. For the hypothesis 2, the researcher also did the literature survey and the interview by suggesting the task of connecting the graphic representations of quadratic function with its symbolic representations. After the interview, the researcher also videotaped and transcribed the solving process of students. Again, the researcher collected the worksheet, interview data, and journals. The interview showed the results in the process of connecting the graphic representations of quadratic function with its symbolic representations based on punctual and topical access, overall access, and integrating both access to the graph. The pedagogical implications are as follows. In the hypothesis 1, the study investigates to find the features of the new teaching method in quest of the traits of quadratic function using the graph. The subjects are well aware of its traits as introduced, but they couldn't immediately realize how to find the multiplication of linear function using the graph. But after teacher's explanation and instruction, they succeed in connecting the graphic representations of quadratic function with its symbolic representations, understanding an axis of symmetry, an apex, and the minimum and maximum of quadratic function in the lesson of finding the symmetry of quadratic function using the similarity of a triangle. They are also able to connect the concepts of intercepts of quadric function, a symmetry, an axis of symmetry, and an apex with those representations after interpreting the graphic representations and understanding the meaning of the symbol in symbolic representations. By this, it can be suggested that teachers have to try to control the learning process downsizing the mathematical proof in terms of symmetry which is a hard concept to students and providing the concepts of an imaginary root or parallel translation. In the hypothesis 2, the connecting process is investigated in the solving process of a translation task between the graphic representations of quadratic function and its symbolic representations. When it comes to punctual and topical access to the graph, students are able to find the symbolic representations by reading the coordinates asked after observing the graph. Also, they are to depict the coordinates in the graph correctly. But the hardest point is that they have difficulty in the translation task because given limit information on graphs. In overall access to the graph, they can't solve the translation task because they fail to understand that the specific point of the graph is equal to that of symbolic representations even though they are able to figure out the overall picture of quadratic function. When it comes to integrating punctual and topical access of quadratic function with its overall access, they well connect its graphic representations with its symbolic representations. Especially, the subjects who learn how to solve the task using the graph after the lesson of hypothesis 1 do the given task fast and correctly by connecting the graphic representations with the symbolic representation using x intercept or an axis of symmetry. In other words, they are better understanding of the meaning of the symbolic representations of quadratic function using punctual, topical and overall access to the graph. In conclusion, the study can suggest that teaching the graphic representations of quadratic function succeed in making students better understand of the meaning of the symbol in symbolic representations of quadratic function and connect the two representation given the opportunities of punctual, topical and overall access to the graph. The research can also propose the implication that teaching the graphic representations of quadratic function and its symbolic representations be helpful in order to better understand quadratic function and control it meaningfully.
