This study deals with discussions to give an overview of novels written by So-jin Kim, the late contemporary novelist who tried to build up his own fiction world somewhat apart from Korean literary mainstreams in 1990's, and thereby explore the fountainhead of his epic driving force. The kernel of Kim's literatures where his fiction works were driven by his desperate search for father is to discover the orphan unconscious and otherness formed from non-oedipal position. Primal experiences of deficiency resulting from incapable and humble father were considered a strong trauma by Kim, but became ironically a foundation of his literary creativity. In the world of capitalistic monogamy, everyone has limitations in achieving ultimate love, whether bourgeois or proletariat. Thus, practical or potential family disorganizations that are faced by others with bourgeois oedipal structure result primarily from misconduct or absence of father. Meanwhile, their unconscious world opens up an opportunity to wish another real life and works also as a basis for social order or revolution, because the presence of father becomes the inception of his son's identity as well as a symbolic model defining his son's pro-social behaviors. However, our Korean modern epic literature went through the colonial era under the rule of imperialist Japanese and could not have any exemplary father role model. Besides, even powerful oedipal spaces were coerced by foreign power. That is why our epic literature needed more influential productive desires. In other words, it needed a new desire, i.e. ‘orphan unconscious’ that drives the intelligentsia to break down boundaries and walls imposed by colonial symbol world and break out into real world beyond the walls. ‘The orphan unconscious’ started originally from discussions of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, which focused on interactions between capitalistic society and family and extended S. Freud's Oedipus complex into capitalistic society. According to their discussions, it means one's unconscious desires to advance into better world beyond father and symbolic world. Moreover, it implies desires for social revolution which is a longing for a person who ever experienced absence of father (disorganized family), as well as a flow of decoding and de-territorialization. Rebellious orphan unconscious in the history of Korean modern novels started from realistic fiction of Sang-seob Yeom and has been still used as a hidden code of hope even in the 21st century, an era of disillusion. It contributes to the central motif of So-jin Kim's novels to inherit the tradition of Korean modern epic literature. Although coming into a chain of lifelong troubles and conflicts with world in the absence of his father, Kim could pose fundamental questions about father and world ironically owing to the power of such disorganization and wander. That is, Kim takes an objective view of Korean father's and mother's miserable and weary life in the context of Korean history and society, coming to realize that they are the greatest victim of Korean modernity and belong to others in barren capitalism. In addition, he criticizes dialectical conversion resulting from thesis versus antithesis, while trying to embody father by microscopic story writing beyond schematic worldview symbolized by dichotomic ideology of partition versus war. In addition, “Seo-jo Jang's People”, a novel of extended reality awareness, presents a crowd of disordered murmurs and non-hierarchical colloquial languages with polyphonic voices of others, and thereby realizes a state of emancipation like Dionysus Festival to create carnival-like vitality in substratal populace. By means of thick spoken languages and verbal feast, Kim brings monophonic and administrative languages of symbolic world to nihility in a flash and captures unique values and truth inherent in the life of trivial and humble slummers. Furthermore, Kim commanded reflective voices to depict transfiguration and defection of Korean intelligent activists in 1980's, who got gradually engaged in the unfair capitalistic logic in cold society where even culture and knowledge are subject to exchange value and instrumental reason. In this way, he was concerned about unrighteousness of social reality. In brief, So-jin Kim relied on the orphan unconscious he went through in the absence of his father and thereby explored his ego outside structure of oedipal structure, so that he could take a variety of standpoints ranging from the most destitute life to perspectives of the intelligent to spotlight deficiency and fundamental lacks in 1980's and 1990's. In addition, Kim turned from choice with binary opposition of thesis versus antithesis and sublated dialectical synthesis serving in discourse around the class with vested interests. And he played a role as a spokesman for the powerless beings like father who had neither thesis nor antithesis. As a result, he could embody concealed nostalgia for community-wide reconciliation and solidarity in his novel works, and rely on novel, a category of literature, to ruminate contradiction of contemporary age where others are suppressed under the principle of identity.
