The contemporary society has been pursuing internationalization and globalization, where various cultures coexist with one another and the interdependence among nations is consistently increasing. In this society, it has become very important to understand the world and other people. The multicultural art education is a reformatory education movement to provide all the social groups, that is, all the students regardless of their races, cultures, and sexes with equal opportunities to learn by restructuring schools and educational customs. The multicultural art education treats the subjects, such as ethnocentrism, prejudice, inequality, racial discrimination and sexual discrimination. The multicultural art education enables the students to understand cultural features of different races, to accept them without prejudice, and to analyze issues, events and phenomena of the society from various cultural view points. This article, as a study on education program of art appreciation in elementary schools through multicultural art education, aims to present a practical strategy for appreciation activity teaching-learning methods by the application of the multicultural art education. I began with literature research, in which I examined the importance and necessity of the exact understanding about the multi-culture art education in chapter II. Chapter III are about the concept and importance of appreciation teaching, the features of elementary art appreciation teaching and the methods for art appreciation. In chapter IV, I examined the present condition and problems by analyzing the contents of the seventh art education curriculum in relation to multi-culture, and groped for concrete multi-culture art appreciation teaching orientation by Billings’ thematic approach and issue-oriented approach. Lastly, in chapter V, I made a multicultural art appreciation lesson program practical in elementary schools, and analyzed the results of the actual application. The results of this study are as follows: First, the art appreciation program based on the thematic approach of the acceptance of multi-culture enables the students to understand the changes of cultures in accordance with time, society and nature, and to respect other cultures, while the program based on the issue-oriented approach enables the students to address themselves to the alienated persons, such as the handicapped, foreign workers and mixed bloods without prejudice, to understand and accept them as the members of the society, and to hope for the solution of the hierarchy problems. Second, with the appreciation work sheet to help multicultural appreciation, the students can easily and with interest participate in classes who have little interest in appreciation class and have difficulty in expressing the feeling and thought from appreciation in language due to the existing expression-oriented curriculum. Third, the art works for appreciation classes can be broadly selected in various art works other than famous Western artists, such as the works of women, the handicapped and obscure artists, and even in media visual images like ad posters. To succeed in the multicultural art education in elementary schools, we should correctly understand the concept of the multicultural art education, and the purpose of the teacher, the experiences of the students and the philosophy of them should be harmonious with one another. The qualified multicultural art appreciation program should be consistently developed corresponding to the ages of the students in elementary schools. To detect the defects of the program and improve the problems, the developed programs need to be applied to actual classes. I hope this article enables the elementary school students to newly understand the importance of the multicultural art education, to establish the cultural identities of elementary students, to accept diversity and difference of various cultures, to overcome the prejudice against the alienated classes, and to respect other people.
