The purpose of the study is to understand the phenomenon of school refusal occurring in high school. To this end, an analysis of the actual conditions of absence, lateness, and leaving school early, occurring in high school, the differences in a tendency of school refusal by socio-demographic characteristics, and the effects of adolescents’ mental health on school refusal were, among others, examined. Through the study, not only the relationship between high school students’ mental health and a tendency of school refusal will be identified, but the basic data for intervention strategies to prevent school refusal by high school students will be provided as well. For the study, a total of 717 male and female high school students, who were in the 1st and 2nd grade at both 4 vocational high schools and 4 academic high schools in Seoul, were selected for a questionnaire survey. The data collected were analyzed through such methods as frequency analysis, one-way ANOVA analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis, using a statistical program of SPSS. The results obtained from the analysis are summarized as follows. First, a look at the actual conditions of absence by sex showed that male students were higher in the number of absence from school than female students. It was found that the lower the score of academic achievement was, and the lower the social status was, the number of absence was higher. Sickness or getting up late in the morning was the most reasons cited for absence, lateness, and leaving school early. Second, a look at the tendency of school refusal by socio-demographic characteristics showed that there were statistically significant differences in the category of sex, types of school, level of academic achievement, and level of social status. The results showed that there was a high tendency of school refusal by male students, those who belonged to the low level of academic achievement and who belonged to the low social status. The findings are the same as those shown in the actual conditions of absence, lateness, and leaving school early, therefore, it shows that a tendency of school refusal is related to absence, lateness, and leaving school early. Accordingly, an investigation into the tendency of school refusal can forecast the absence, lateness, and leaving school early. Third, a look at the effects of adolescents’ mental health on the tendency of school refusal showed that among the variables of mental health, the variables which affect the tendency of school refusal as a whole were shown to be interpersonal sensitivity and anxiety. In addition, among the sub-factors of the tendency of school refusal, the friend relationship at school was shown to have a relatively high explanatory power. Fourth, a look at the effects of adolescents’ mental health on the tendency of school refusal by socio-demographic characteristics showed that both female and male students were affected by interpersonal sensitivity, and female students in particular were affected by anxiety as well as interpersonal sensitivity. This is consistent with the results of the precedent study that female students have a higher degree of anxiety than male students. The results varied by types of school as shown in the following; students of academic high school were affected by anxiety, while students of vocational high school affected by both interpersonal sensitivity and depression. By levels of academic achievement, the factor of anxiety was shown to affect the tendency of school refusal for those in the high level of academic achievement, while interpersonal sensitivity shown to affect the tendency of school refusal for those in the low and intermediate level of academic achievement. This is because the successful students tend to be affected by the burden that they should excel in academic achievement, along with the anxiety affecting their falling academic achievement, and because they have high expectations for the college entrance exam. By levels of social status, anxiety was shown to affect those in the high social status, and depression was shown to affect those in the middle social status, while both interpersonal sensitivity and phobic anxiety shown to affect those in the low social status. In the case of co-residence with parents, both interpersonal sensitivity and anxiety were shown to affect them, while in the case of residence without parents, anxiety shown to affect them. The interpersonal sensitivity, not anxiety, in the case of co-residence with parents, has a greater effect on them, and this is because they should take into account their parents’ opinions or decisions rather than their own will or assertions. In the case of residence without parents, they are likely to be a member of a single-parent family or a grandparent-headed family, and the reason for the anxiety affecting them is probably due to their pervious chaotic experiences in the family before their high school days. In the case of absence experiences, anxiety was shown to have a 20.5 % of explanatory power. Anxiety was shown to have a 24% of explanatory power especially when it comes to the problems of friend relationship. This indicates that those who are absent from school are experiencing internal anxieties, and the anxiety seem to occur when they have problems with their friends.
