The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect to infants in their language development and linguistic and behavior response and to evaluate the response differences when teachers read picturebooks to them depending on teacher's interaction type, assuming that there is a correlation between them. Two detail research questions were raised to achieve this purpose. 1. Is there any difference in language development of infants depending on teacher's interaction type in reading picturebooks? 1-1 Any difference in receptive language and expressive language among the infants? 1-2 Any difference in vocabulary acquisition among the infants? 1-3 Any difference in reading behavior among the infants? 1-4 Any difference in handling picturebooks among the infants? 2. Is there any difference in linguistic and behavior response among the infants during interaction depending on teacher's interaction type in reading picturebooks? Objects of this study were 15 teachers and 90 infants from the 2 year-old class located in S, D, and Y district in Seoul. The selection of the objects were made after observing interactions between teachers and infants when teachers read picturebooks. Then teachers were categorized into three interaction types by synthetically reflecting previous study results(Youjin Han, 2000; DeTemple & Tabors, 1994; DeTemple, 2001; Dickinson & Smith, 1994) instructional interaction type, diffusive interaction type, and passive interaction type. Finally five teachers and 30 students were selected for each type. Three tests, pre-test, during the picturebook reading, and post-test were conducted to compare linguistic response and behavior response among the infants revealed during language development interaction process depending on teacher's interaction type. All the teachers were required to read 16 picturebooks in the class of 2-3 infants, one book each during elective free activity time, twice a week for 8 weeks. In the pre-test the average and standard deviation for receptive language, expressive language, vocabulary, and reading behavior among infants for each group were yielded. Then one-way ANOVA was performed based on the test scores to see if there were pre-existing differences in receptive language, expressive language, vocabulary, and reading behavior among infants for different groups before the picturebook reading interaction test. In the post-test the average and standard deviation for the same test items as the pre-test were yielded. Then ANCOVA was performed with the pre-test scores under control to analyze the difference among infants for three groups. Also Scheffe post-test was performed to evaluate the difference among the groups. To see the behavior difference in handling picturebooks between the pre-test and the post-test, frequency and percentage were yielded. To evaluate the linguistic and behavior response among the infants, the interaction process during picturebook reading was video recorded and the frequency was evaluated for each test item, based on analysis standard. Then chi-square test was performed for the evaluated frequency for each type of teacher. In this study receptive and expressive language of infants were measured by using the Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale (PRES, Kim Youngtae, Sung Taejai, Lee Younkyung, 2003) as a research tool for language development of infants. For the vocabulary test a research device, which was made based on the vocabulary selection scheme by Beck, McKeown, and Kucan(2002), was used. Also for the reading behavior test of the infants a research device based on "Reading Behavior" by Sulzby(1985) was used. For the picturebook handling behavior test a standard from the PictureBook Handling Behavior by Schickedanz(1986, 1999) was used after being modified and supplemented. For the linguistic and behavior response test an analysis standard by Lamme and Packer(1986) and Lee Youngja and Lee Jongsook(1996) was used after being modified and supplemented. This study showed following results. First, there was meaningful difference in the improvement of receptive language, expressive language, vocabulary, and reading behavior among the infants depending on the teacher's picturebook reading interaction type. Especially teachers belonging to a diffusive interaction type gave greatest influence in the improvement of receptive language, expressive language, vocabulary, and reading behavior of the infants. However, no meaningful difference was observed between instructive interaction type and passive interaction type of teachers. Second, most positive influence was observed in the picturebook handling behavior of the infants belonging to teachers of diffusive interaction type, such as 'visually paying attention to the picturebook', 'reverting inverted picturebooks', 'expressing to read other picturebooks', 'turning picturebook pages alone', etc. Third, there was meaningful difference in linguistic response frequency among the infants depending on teacher's picturebook reading interaction type. Most of the linguistic responses revealed positive in diffusive interaction type. Negative linguistic response such as 'speechless listening' was most frequent in passive interaction type. Forth, there was meaningful difference in the behavior response frequency among the infants depending on teacher's picturebook reading interaction type. In the test of picturebook handling behavior most positive response was revealed in diffusive interaction type, but most negative response in passive interaction type. It was shown, from this study, that diffusive interaction was the most effective way in positively improving linguistic and behavior responses to infants when teachers read picturebooks to them. There were studies on interaction between mother and infant in home environment. But this study is crucial in that it extended the scope to interaction between teacher and infant in nursery or child-care center. Also this stud
