Based on family system theories, this article aims to study two areas: the characteristics of and supportive means for the families with disabled children, and the overall system of the families with disabled children and the system between siblings as a subordinate family system. For the research, home visiting was initially performed from March 3rd to 8th of 2008, and in-depth interviewing was carried out from October 20th to 24th of 2008. The subject of the study includes five families with disabled children residing in Ulsan. The in-depth interview was individually conducted after getting an agreement from the subjects, and one visit took about an hour. The interview contents were recorded and transcribed, and pattern analysis and open encoding were performed. The analysis results of this research are as follows. First of all, as the psychological characteristics among ‘the characteristics of the overall system of the families with disabled children’, depression, obsession, nervous temperament, exhaustion, tediousness, tightness, a sense of guilt or shame, humiliation, concern for birth or the future of the disabled children are shown. In regard of the economic characteristics, the result shows that they feel pressure for education and hospital expenses. And for the physical characteristics, they experience hepatic diseases, thyroid diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, gastritis, gastrospasm, headache, eye diseases, or abnormal circulation. In terms of the characteristics of social relations, they suffer from social isolation or superficial relationships with the family members. About the characteristics of family relationship, the result shows that they have family conflicts due to the grandparents’ negative emotion and attitudes or conflicts between the parents for the father’s uncooperative attitudes. Secondly, among ‘the characteristics of non-disabled siblings of the families with disabled children’, psychological characteristics show that they have fastidiousness, perfectionism, serious rejection towards strangers, nervous temperament, violence, wounds from not being cared for or loved by their parents, a sense of shame, or humiliation. In the physical characteristics, sour stomach, indigestion, or hepatic diseases were shown. And for the characteristics of social relations, they have passive attitudes in forming peer relations. About the stress of the non-disabled siblings in the families with disabled children, they get stressed from the behavioral characteristics of the disabled children or the burden to look after or do duty for them. Among the characteristics of family relationship, it is shown that the parents in the families with disabled children treat non-disabled children in a strict or rather a high tempered manner. And the parents in the families with disabled children feel sorry for the non-disabled children and are supported by them emotionally as well as psychologically. It is also shown that emotional expression or communication between the parents and non-disabled children is not actively performed. And the parents hardly expect anything from the non-disabled children and do not want to give a burden to take care of the disabled children later on. Thirdly, The requirement for the family support service for a child with disability was shown to be medical support, a program for stress removal, fostering support service, psychological therapy, parental education and family education, traveling and camping. ‘The means to provide the families with disabled children with supportive service’ which may be proposed on the basis of the above research results can be home visiting consultation or psychological treatment, free medical examination, programs to ease the stress, group consultation and programs to improve the family relationship, education for understanding the characteristics of disabled children and educational programs for family life, governmental support for rearing disabled children, and leisure (respite) support programs to foster the family relationship. Political proposals based on what has been stated above are to establish policies for the families with disabled children not just for individual disabled children, extend organizations to support families with disabled children, provide the families with supportive service by experts for family, design support systems to bring up the disabled children in the governmental dimension, extend the Respite project, and finally integrative support of projects concerned with people with disabilities. Proposals for the following studies based on this research are as below. First, this paper has a regional limit since the subjects are the families with disabled children residing in Ulsan only; thus, it is necessary to study families living in different regions as well. Second, in terms of the family environment of the subject families, it is confined to low-income families; therefore, it is needed to focus on varied families with disabled children in regard of their income afterwards. Third, since non-disabled siblings will exhibit diverse characteristics in the course of their lifetime being with the disabled siblings, it is required for the follow-up researches to study the non-disabled siblings along their life cycle. Fourth, the subjects of the in-depth interview are the primary rearers (mothers) of the families with disabled children. Therefore, it is important to study other members of the families with disabled children more concretely. Fifth, based on the characteristics of and support means for the families with disabled children suggested in this study, it is necessary to design and provide programs for supporting families with disabled children, and the follow-up studies will have to evaluate their effectiveness and satisfaction.
