The purpose of this study was to understand the psychological problems and sufferings of families with disabled children and, through a qualitative study, to explore the different counseling needs of fathers and mothers. Three research question were proposed: 1. What are the psychological problems among parents with disabled children? What are the differences of these psychological experiences? 2. What effects do disabled children have on their family life? 3. How are counseling needs different between a husband and wife with disabled children? The subjects in this study consisted of ten parents who had disabled children ranging from three to eleven years old. The parents were interviewed in depth, and the results were analyzed using consensual qualitative analysis. The major conclusions derived from this study are as follows: First, fathers with disabled children accepted the child's disability realistically, whereas the mothers with disabled children accepted the child's disability emotionally. The father thought that the disability was reality. Therefore, it was more important to the father to help their child with their disability than to emotionally worry about the future. On the other hand, the mother emotionally suffered for a long time, due to her child's disability, and was influenced by her surrounding social environment. While she was exhausted, she also experienced moments of pleasure, gratefulness, and life's small moments of happiness. Second, The parents who have disbled children feel uncomforable with focused on their own paychological problems. There were many serious problems between the husband and wife because of the stress and fatigue associated with raising their disabled child. Their child, who did not have a disability, showed signs of jealousy, hostility, and even a sense of guilt. But they also exhibited many other merits: understanding, thoughtfulness, sensitivity to others' needs, and a strong sense of responsibility. Third, the parents who had a disabled child put their child first before they thought about their own psychological problems and mental anguish. For that reason, their counseling needs were largely concentrated on their disabled child. The father, especially, found a solution to his problem for himself and had a negative point-of-view about counseling. Unlike the father, the mother did not find a solution by herself and did not think about her own problems owing to the stress of raising her disabled child. This study was meaningful in that it provided the basic information for psychological assistance to parents with disabled children based on differing counseling needs and personality traits of the father and mother with a disabled child. The major conclusions derived from the study were as follows: The parents with disabled children need a mentor and a support system, and they should ask for special counseling from someone who has expert knowledge and understanding about their child and their child's disability.
