The Goryeo Dynasty, which reunified the Korean Peninsula and inherited its national culture from the United Shilla Dynasty, was under the influence of China during the periods before and after the national reunification. This assumption can be proved by the fact that the hair styles and the makeup culture in Goryeo were fashioned after Chinese culture in dress and ornaments at the time. In this light, one can see that the dress and ornaments of the Goryeo period represented in historical dramas on television are lack of historical authenticity. Therefore, this study aims to examine hair styles, hair ornaments, makeup style, and makeup tools, which were in vogue during the Goryeo Dynasty. It enacts a comparative approach in which the dress and makeup cultures in the three consecutive Goryeo periods, such as the transitional period from Shilla to Goryeo, the first half period of the Goryeo Dynasty, the second half period of the Goryeo Dynasty, are examined in relation to the influence of the four contemporary Chinese dynasties such as the Tang Dynasty, the Song Dynasty, the Weon Dynasty, and the Myeong Dynasty.
The hair styles in the Goryeo period includes sokbal, ch'umagye, choch'ongye, ahwangye, and ssangsugye: all of these hair styles are featured in historical dramas such as Shindon, The Morning of the Empire (Chegugui ach'im), The Age of Swordsmen (Muin shidae). Ch'umagye is a typical Goryeo hair style, indicating Chinese influence. Ssangsugye is also one of the representative hair styles in Goryeo imported from the Weon Dynasty: this study restores and show the original shape of ssangsugye.
The primary hair ornaments during the Goryeo period were an official uniform cap and other personal adornments. Mongsu and pokdu, two major kinds of the official uniform cap, shows that they were originated from Chinese official uniform caps at that time. It is also said that a hair ribbon(tot'urak daenggi) and a bridal tiara(Jogduri) were a variation of the Mongolian style. This study shows the dualization of the makeup style in Goryeo by analysing the makeup techniques used to embellish the eyebrows, the cheeks, and the lips, respectively. It also shows that the beauty culture of the Goryeo period well preserved traditions despite a great deal of social changes by examining the methods regarding hair-dyeing, skin care, and bathing. This study is to encourage the producers of historical dramas to be more faithful to historical facts in restoring the dress and ornaments in the Goryeo period.
