Focus-on-form approach, which Long and Robinson (1998) defined as "an occasional shift of attention to linguistic code features by the teacher or one or more students during an otherwise meaning-focused classroom lesson," is an effective way to teach a foreign language in class. The main idea of focus-on-form corresponds to the goal of the 7th Korean National Curriculum in that the approach aims at developing both fluency and accuracy in English learning. Focus on form instructions deserve more attention in Korean EFL contexts where unconscious acquisition caused by exposure to an abundant second language input outside the classroom is likely to be less critical than conscious awareness in influencing gains in linguistic and communicative competence. Focus on form can be achieved by either directing learners' attention to input (input-based instruction) or figuring out the gap between L2 learners' own production and a target structure (output-based instruction). Among focus-on-form instructions, dictogloss is an output-focused task requiring collaborative tasks and encouraging students to reflect on their own output. It consists of a dictation exercise during which the students take down notes in the form of content words in order to reconstruct the text with their peers before participating in a class discussion for the purpose of error analysis (Lim & Jacobs, 2001). This study investigates the effects of dictogloss especially on the English listening comprehension as well as grammar learning. To this end, two classes of seventy-three students of eleventh grade participated in this study as an experimental or a control group for about two weeks. The control group was given only input enhancement materials with traditional explicit instruction of the target grammar whereas the experiment group also took part in dictogloss task. In the dictogloss activity, the experimental group was given blanked sheets for their ease instead of genuine white papers. The dictogloss group was asked to make up their own texts after listening and to compare their own construction with the original text in groups. Before and after the experiment, each group was tested with 20 questions including listening comprehension and grammar points. Simultaneously, one questionnaire was carried out after experiment. It comprised items on emotional factors of motivation about English class and willingness to understand the target text. Both pre- and post-tests were analyzed in terms of the whole score, listening comprehension, and grammar. In addition, the correlation statistics between the post-test scores and the responses to the questionnaire were conducted to examine the motivational factors of the two groups. The statistics were done by SPSS 10.0. The results showed the positive effects of dictogloss on listening comprehension and grammar learning. First, the dictogloss group improved better than the controlled group in total score after experiment. However, the analysis of both listening comprehension and grammar scores indicated that the significant difference mainly resulted from the listening comprehension. In other words, the difference in listening comprehension score was statistically significant, but the improvement in grammar learning was not between two groups. Second, the dictogloss instruction influenced more positively the improvement of the lower level group rather than the high level students, especially in the listening comprehension. That is, the lower level students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher gain score than those in the control group. However, high level group didn't show any significant difference between the two groups. This finding suggests that the dictogloss instruction could be more beneficial to the lower level students rather than the high level, which is contrary to the previous studies(Kang D-H., 2005; Kang H-A., 2003). Most of the previous studies found the beneficial effects of focus-on-form on the high-level students in grammar while this study showed the positive effects on the lower level in listening comprehension. The contradictory findings might be due to two facts: the quantity of grammar points and the term of the experiment. Previous researches treated with only one grammar point during their experiment, while this study different points per each class. And experimental term was 10 weeks or 8 weeks versus 2 weeks. However, the findings showed that the post-test scores of the high level students had a positive correlation in motivational emotion factors, while those of the lower level didn't. This finding supports the previous results that focus-on-form including dictogloss well-matched the instructional preference of the high level students (Kang, 2005; Kim, 2001). Overall, it was concluded that dictogloss technique was effective on promoting listening ability, especially for the lower level. Also it was positively associated with the motivational factors of the high level students. So it would be helpful to apply this dictogloss technique to Korean EFL high schools. More studies should be conducted in future in either listening or grammar with different population in a longer term.
