As there is a growing global concern for educational reform, problems with existing kindergarten education rise to the surface, and new educational models are drawing increasing public attention. Specifically, our education sector pays growing attention to Waldorf education, one of alternative and innovative educational models that is being rapidly prevailing in the world including Germany. Waldorf education, which is built on R. Steiner's early childhood education thought, seeks after a new understanding of humanity, and its educational ideals are characterized by human-centered, well-rounded and holistic approach, an experiential way of looking at nature and life, and a pursuit of individuality and community-mindedness. Waldorf early childhood education is based on human science and focuses on the growth, development and learning possibilities of individual preschoolers. Its educational system and method aim at teaching young children to acquire skills that every social member must have, and it is in search of timely, nature-friendly education and orderly and harmonious life. According to that education, preschoolers should interact with their peers and teacher in multi-age class. Teachers who act sincerely according to their free will could serve as a strong role model, and young children personalize every activity by modeling after them and exerting their imagination. Such a spontaneous activity is viewed as very effective education that enables them to apply freedom and creativity they elicit from their inner world into real life. Indeed, Waldorf education was the first move to heal mental emptiness and redress educational inequality. In our country's early childhood education sector, education based on Waldorf's thought gets widespread, which provides new information and knowledge on education and focuses on child-centered, community- oriented and well-rounded education. According to that thought, in which direction early childhood education should be led could be determined in view of the true nature of preschoolers and pre-industrial society where man shared his life with nature as a community. Likewise, early childhood art education should deal with how to find human nature in surrounding environments, enhance it and create the right ego through well-balanced and animated art activities. To make it happen, the focus of early childhood art education should be placed on the ideal growth and harmony of the world and man based on the concept of 'nature.' In that perspective, the importance of 'hands-on inquiry learning' should be stressed, and there is a necessity to lay the academic foundation for early childhood art education based on Waldorf education in an effort to boost the sensitivity and emotion of preschoolers in order for them to grow into competent people who could take the initiative in the future society. The purpose of this study was to examine Waldorf kindergarten's art education based on Steiner's thought that came into spotlight as new creativity-development education in the 21st century. And it's also meant to develop and apply an early childhood art program on the basis of nature-friendly Waldorf education to foster young children's emotion and sensitivity.
