This study aims to analyze factors that affect burnout of social workers. Measured was the extent of burnout of social workers at social welfare centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggido, the main areas of social welfare, and analyzed the factors that affect the extent of burnout, which were divided to personal factors, client factors, work environment factors, and organizational factors, based on personal and emotional characteristics of social workers. The analyzing model set burnout of social workers as the dependent variables, and personal factors, client factors, work environment factors, and organizational factors as the independent variables. The survey data for which 156 individuals completed a questionnaire was analyzed too. Besides, this study is to seek ways to prevent and present measures for burnout of social workers so that social workers, as individuals, can have positive thinking for their occupation and life and endeavor to enhance their job, and that social welfare centers can reduce expenses for recruiting after existing workers left the occupation, and improve their image before the local residents. As to the analysis methods, frequency analysis was adopted to examine the general characteristics, and factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha verification were implemented to clarify the reliability and validity of each item in a questionnaire in terms of inner consistency. In addition, implemented were factor analysis to find factors related to each item, principal component analysis for the factor extracting model, ANOVA for average comparison, and simple regression analysis ad multiple regression analysis for dependent variables and independent variables. The results are as follows: First of all, the following is the result of the multi-dimensional approach to the factors that affect burnout of social workers: First, it turned out that personal factors had meaningful effect on burnout of social workers, and that gender, whether or not he is married, and working years had meaningful relation with factors that affect burnout of social workers such as lack of a sense of achievement, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. Second, it showed that client factors as well had meaningful effect on burnout of social workers. Among client factors, especially the number of clients, relationship with clients, and problems of clients had meaningful relation with factors that affect burnout of social workers such as lack of a sense of achievement, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. Third, it found out that factors related to working environment had meaningful effect on burnout of social workers. Among working environment-related items, workload, vagueness of duties, and conflict related to duties had meaningful relation with factors that affect burnout of social workers such as lack of a sense of achievement, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. Fourth, it turned out that organizational factors as well had meaningful effect on burnout. Among organizational characteristics, autonomy of individuals, level of reward, and structure had meaningful relation with factors that affect burnout of social workers such as lack of a sense of achievement, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that burnout of social workers was neither only a matter of individuals, clients, working environment, nor organizational custom, and thus that viewing this issue from one single perspective could not solve the problem. Thus, based on the findings above, the conclusion of this study is as follows: First, it is necessary to put effects actively not only as individuals but also as organized groups to prevent burnout of social workers. Second, to reduce burnout of social workers, it is absolutely necessary to make clear the duties of social workers and find out ways to reduce their workload. Third, the organizational condition should be able to make social workers feel comfort while working. A sense of comfort indicates the level of physical and emotional conditions that individuals feel. This is essential to create liberal atmosphere in the organization so that social workers can work comfortably and improve the quality of life at a social welfare organization, in which duties are uncertain and unstandardized in general, and to operate the organization based on human-centered values so that the members can rely on the organization. Lastly, it turned out that reward among factors related to work environment was important in relation to burnout. Therefore, reward, which indicates their credit and influences in the organization, should be strengthened.
