연구에 사용된 데이터는 이 학급을 대상으로 수업한 5학년 2단원 'What day is it today?' 첫째, 교사 발화에 대한 대답의 수(the number of answers per question)이다. ...

The purpose of this research is to search for answers to the question, 'What questions are open questions?' by analyzing teacher talk in real classroom discourse. Open questions have educational significance in that they make children increase their self-regulation in language use by admitting the possibility of various answers, instead of making them follow one given answer. Considering this potentially positive role of open questions in a child development, it is necessary to find out what kinds of teacher initiate draw multiple answers, and to analyze the reasons why certain types of teacher initiate bring about multiple answers. The participants of this study are one specialist English teacher who works for a public elementary school in Seoul and one 5th grade class of 30 children who learn English from the teacher. The data we treated in this study is from the second lesson of 5th grade, 'What day is it today?'. A total four periods of the lesson were recorded and transcribed in the one class. The data set consisted of 2,533 turns and 9,345 words. There were no specially designed materials put into this study. We recorded and transcribed the authentic classroom talk that occurred between the teacher and the children within the regular class period for our analysis. In order to decide the openness of a question, we selected and considered two quantitative indicators. First of all, we looked into the number of answers per question. We coded every teacher initiate found in the whole data set by calculating how many answers follow each teacher initiate. Secondly, we investigated the average number of words per answer by counting the average words each answer had. To discuss the differences in answers between the teacher's questions and the children's questions, we also coded every student initiate in the same way. We then examined the number of answers per question and the average number of words per answer according to several different empirical approaches. First, taking the structural approach, we divided and coded questions into 'yes/no questions' or 'wh-questions' and then examined the number of answers per question and the average number of words per answer of each question. Second, taking a systemic-functional approach, we divided and coded questions into 'material process questions' or 'mental process questions' or 'verbal process questions' and then examined the number of answers per question and the average number of words per answer of each question. Lastly, taking a more content-based approach, we classified questions according to the purpose of a question and the quality of a question. We divided and coded questions into 'conversation questions' or 'display questions' or 'non-epistemic questions' according to the question purpose, and into 'earnest questions' or 'non-earnest questions' and 'coherent questions' or 'non-coherent questions' according to the question quality, and then examined the number of answers per question and the average number of words per answer of each question. Based on all the results from the quantitative analysis, we discussed the reasons for the outcomes by exemplifying the data extracts from our data set. The results and the discussion are summarized as follows. First of all, the results based on structural approach indicated that 'wh-questions' have more and longer answers than 'yes/no questions'. We suggested that this result comes from the fact that 'wh-questions' allow children more freedom in answering questions. This is consistent with the general idea about open questions, that is, open questions are wh-questions. However, we noted that it is not enough only to count on the structural approach to decide whether a question is an open question or not. Next, the results based on systemic-functional approach showed that 'verbal process questions' have more and longer answers than 'mental process questions'. We explained that this is because 'verbal process questions' are questions that make children directly verbalize their answers, unlike 'mental process questions' and 'material process questions' which may be decisively answered with a couple of words. 'Verbal process questions' may also make students produce more and longer answers by having them imitate and transform their peers' answers or their teacher's answers, while 'mental process questions' and 'material process questions' require students to go through the process of thinking in which the students think of answers in Korean (mother tongue) and then how to express the answers in English (foreign language). Thirdly, the results according to question purpose, which is one criterion based on more content-based approach, revealed that there is no difference between 'conversation questions' and 'display questions' in both the number of answers and the length of answers. We pointed out this result comes from the fact that the 'display question' draws out more and longer answers from children by being used to further the teacher's educational intention in the classroom. In contrast, 'non-epistemic questions' showed a significant difference in answers by having fewer and shorter answers. The reason for this result is that the purpose of 'non-epistemic questions' is not related to conveying topic related information to get answers from students. This is also reflected in the constitution of 'non-epistemic questions'. They mainly consist of comprehension checkup questions, which are not focused on the content. This result was also concerned with the outcomes according to question quality, the other factor regarding the content of question. 'Non-epistemic questions' are more likely to be 'non-earnest questions'. Since both the teacher and the students do not take 'non-earnest questions' seriously, they had fewer and shorter answers. Another criterion having to do with question quality is 'coherence'. 'Coherent questions' had more answers than 'non-coherent questions'. This seems caused
