The performance of two-phase anaerobic digestion of food waste-water (FWW), a wastewater generated from the recycling of food waste, was investigated under various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The volatile solids (VS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the FWW were 70.9 g/L and 147.9 g/L, respectively. Mesophilic two-phase anaerobic digestion, inoculated with anaerobic sludge (100%, v/v), was operated with working volumes of 1L and 5L for acidification and methane fermentation reactors, respectively. The digesters were operated with three HRTs ranging from 15 days to 25 days. The VS, VSS and COD removal efficiencies of 25days HRT trial were 81.1%, 70.0% and 84.3%, respectively, with biogas yield of 71.1 ㎥/wwt. The VS, VSS and COD removal efficiencies of 20days trial were 83.8%, 72.6% and 86.1%, respectively with biogas yield of 72.6 71.1 ㎥/wwt. At 15 days HRT, the VS, VSS and COD removal efficiencies were 77.9%, 63.4% and 81.4%, respectively, with biogas yield of 66.1 71.1 ㎥/wwt. Overall, two-phase anaerobic digestion process treating FWW was successfully operated in the laboratory scale and the highest performance in terms of methane yield and substrate removal efficiency was observed at 20 days HRT. These results could provide basic information which is crucial for the design of field-scale anaerobic digestion of food wastewater.
