The purpose of this study was to determine potential effects of participation of the handicapped in leisure activities on their living satisfaction and variations thereof depending upon their disability type, and was also to propose good leisure activities for their better living satisfaction depending on their disability type, so that it could provide reference materials required for preparing a leisure activity program in favor of maximum living satisfaction of the handicapped. In order to achieve the above purposes, this study set the following questions: First, how much actively the adults with mental retardation, brain disability, visual disability, audial disability and verbal disability participate in leisure activities? And how much significant may be there differences in their participation in leisure activities depending upon their disability type? Secondly, how much the adults with mental retardation, brain disability, visual disability, audial disability and verbal disability feel satisfied with their daily life? And how much significant may be there differences in their living satisfaction depending on their disability type Thirdly, how much may the participation of those handicapped adults in leisure activities have effects on their living satisfaction depending on their disability type? Based on these three major questions, this study used a questionnaire form to survey the handicapped people who used general welfare centers for the disabled, errand centers for the visual disabled, and finger language translation centers (under the auspice of the Korea Association of the Deaf) in Gyeongnam province. All data collected from survey were processed using SPSS 12.0 and were also analyzed or tested through frequency analysis, reliability analysis, cross-tabulation analysis for chi- square test, post-hoc test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study can be outlined as follows: First, it was found that our handicapped respondents (the adults with mental retardation, brain disability, visual disability, audial disability and verbal disability) scored 4.06 points on the average out of full 5 in overall participation in leisure activities, which means that they participated very inactively in general leisure activities. Among others, it was notable that they took most active part in inactive indoor activities like watching TV, while taking very inactive part in other leisure activities involving active physical activities such as Taekwondo and rafting. According to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) on potential differences in participation of our handicapped respondents in leisure activities depending upon their disability type, it was found that there were significant differences in their overall participation in leisure activities among groups depending upon their disability type on statistical basis. Secondly, it was found that our handicapped respondents scored 2.94 points on the average in their general living satisfaction, where they felt satisfied most at personal relationships, but felt satisfied least at financial conditions. Depending on disability type, it was found that audial and verbal disability group felt highest satisfaction at their daily life, which was followed by mental retardation group, visual disability group and brain disability group respectively. And according to test on potential differences in living satisfaction, it was found that there were relatively significant differences in living satisfaction depending upon disability type on statistical basis. Thirdly, this study used correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis to test potential effects of our handicapped respondents' participation in leisure activities on their living satisfaction depending on their disability type. As a result, this study could come to the following findings: For adults with mental retardation, it was found that only static leisure activities had significant positive effects on their satisfaction at personal relationships, work/occupation, social leisure, sense of happiness and autonomy/self-esteem on statistical basis. For the adults with brain disability, it was found that only leisure activities of social participation had significant positive effects on their satisfaction with work/occupation, financial conditions, life of social leisure, sense of happiness and autonomy/self-esteem on statistical basis. For the adults with visual disability, it was found that tourism-related leisure activities had significant effects only on their satisfaction at personal relationships on statistical basis. And it was found that recreational leisure activities had negative effects on their satisfaction at personal relationships, financial conditions, social and leisure life, and the sense of happiness. Moreover, it was found that leisure activities of cultural art had negative effects on their satisfaction at financial conditions. For adults with audial and verbal disability, it was found that static leisure activities had significant effects on their satisfaction at autonomy and self-esteem, while leisure activities of cultural art had significant effects on their satisfaction at social and leisure life on statistical basis. Keywords: Adults with mental retardation, adults with brain disability, the visual disabled, the audial disabled, the verbal disabled, participation in leisure activities, living satisfaction
