한국 현대 소설에 나타난 배회자 모티브 연구 : <소설가 구보씨의 일일>과 <서울 1964년 겨울> A study on the flaneur motif in modern korean novels [Based on "The day spent by a novelist Mr. Kubo" and "Seoul, winter of 1964"]원문보기

This thesis is a look into the flâneur motif portrayed in the modern Korean novel. A flâneur is a character risen from modern cities who observes and perceives the endlessly changing and fast-moving city while slowly strolling through the city. A flâneur cannot be parted from a modern city and is a character that must be mentioned in discussions about the modernity. In novels, the primary places where a flâneur appears are the streets of Paris, as well as the streets of London, Berlin, Dublin, Petersburg or even the streets of Seoul. The flâneur motif in Korean literature appears frequently in works that deal with the modernization issues of the 30s of the 20th century when urban modernization was in progress. However, the modernization, and urbanization as the result of the modernization, came to a stop due to the war that broke up in June 25, 1950. Then after, following the reappearance of modern cities, the flâneur character type reenters the stage in the 60s. Therefore, in this thesis, by analyzing the works of 30s, Park Tae-won’s “The day spent by a novelist Mr. Kubo” and 60s Kim Seung Ok’s “Seoul, Winter of 1964”, I will look into the types of the flâneur character and changes which occurred changes due to the circumstances of the era. First, in chapter 2, I analyze the changes in 19 century Paris, in particularl the development of industrial capitalism and the rise of citizen power; the modernization and restructuring of the city; and then will look into the type of a flâneur character that first appeared from such a social environment. Also, I am to introduce more various types of the flâneur characters as opposed to the previous analysis that focused mainly on the Benjamin’s stroller point of view. Then I will analyze the flâneur character that appeared in Korean literature in the 30s and 60s. First, I will take a look at the modern city of the 30s during the Japanese colonial period when the flâneur character first fully appears in Korean literature. Then, through Park Tae Won’s “The day spent by a novelist Mr. Kubo”, I will analyze the aspects of wandering around a city. During the many changes resulting from the special social and political circumstances of the 30s, in particular the modernization under the colonial regime, the intellectuals roamed the streets of the cities. The intellectuals tended to do so idly and, unable to find their status in this new environment, tended to wander mentally as well. Upon such actual changes in the environment the writers started to look for a new type and new character that could deal with such changes. Modernism was a new attempt that could reflect such a reality and with this attempt, a new type of a principal character named “flâneur” appeared. Park Tae Won shows the social realities of the colonial era and the inner status of an intellectual who lives as a surplus identity in such an era through the flâneur character type in “The day spent by a novelist Mr. Kubo”. The 60s is the era when the flâneur re-appears in Korean literature. The 60s was the era when major social and political changes occurred and along with the rapid urbanization and modernization due to economic development. Isolated urban lives and ills and routinization started to appear. Kim Seung Ok’s “Seoul, Winter of 1964” which was released in this era is a novel that portrays the dark social times and the isolation of human beings. By creating a character that has a flâneur personality, Kim Seung Ok reflected the core of the capitalistic city under the repressive regime and portrayed the isolated mentality of individuals. The flâneurs that appeared in the Korean literature of the 30s and 60s are intellectuals that have a common ground in that they observe and portray the changing reality, acknowledge themselves in a new environment, and try to find their own “place in the heart.” However, while the flâneur that appears in the novels of Park Tae Won in the 30s does not compromise with the reality of colonial reality and roams the streets in order to keep its own conscience, the flâneur in the novels of the 60s Kim Seong Ok is the one who tries to escape the routine of everyday life.
