At the end of 19th century, a late-romantic German composer/ conductor Gustav Mahler wrote his 9 symphonies along with over 40 art songs. Mahler’s aptitude as a gifted conductor enabled him to be able to understand the depth of orchestral color, and this musical sense affected greatly in his song writing. Kindertotenlieder was composed in the early 1900’s in which time Mahler was actively working as a conductor in Wien, Austria. This work is a collection of 5 songs written for voice and orchestral accompaniment. It was written simultaneously with his symphonies 5, 6, and 7 at the time. Kindertotnelieder breaks out of Mahler’s former use of German folk poems Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and instead takes on Rückert’s lyrical poems. Through the contrasting musical colors of orchestral instruments, Mahler was able to express the darkness and lightness of things described in Rückert’s poetry. Since the very beginning of Mahler’s career as a composer, he blended poetry and literature into his symphonies to express his upmost philosophy and ideals in music. Kindertotenlieder exemplified Mahler’s novel craftsmanship in the blending of poetry and orchestra. This music signified as transitional music in which later resulted yet another masterpiece like Das Lied von der Erde. In this paper, I intend to analyze the poetry and orchestration of Kindertotenlieder to lay out their significant relationship. I will look into providing performance guidance of this piece by looking into Mahler’s use of instruments in his symphonies to see how they are mirrored in Kindertotenlider. Lastly, this paper will also discuss what needs to be carefully thought-out when performing with piano accompaniment.
