(The) study of a role of professional school counselors' professional identity in the relationship between role conflict and burnout원문보기

This study was designed to examine the role of the professional identity of professional school counselors in the relation between role conflict and burnout. Total of 232 professional school counselors participated in the study and data were analyzed by correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. The results were as follows: First, professional school counselors' role conflict didn't show a significant relationship with professional identity but showed a significant positive relationship with incompetence only among counselor burnout variables. In addition, professional identity showed significant negative relationships with burnout variables. Second, because the relationship between role conflict and professional identity was not significant, the mediating effect of professional identity couldn't be investigated. Third, professional identity played as a moderator between role conflict and burnout (exhaustion and negative work environment) variables. When professional school counselors experience high level of role conflict with low level of professional identity, they experience high level of burnout. This result indicated that professional identity could be an important variable to play in terms of preventing or intervening professional school counselors' burnout. Limitations of the study and implications for professional school counselors and counselor educators were discussed.
