A Study on the Satisfaction Factors on Sign Language Interpreting Service of Deaf College students The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting deaf college students' satisfaction with the sign language interpreting service provided for in the teaching-learning situation and thereby, suggest some reasonable sign language interpreting service useful to the deaf college students for their adaptation to the school life. For this purpose, the following study points were set up; First, how about the differences of deaf college students' satisfaction with the sign language interpreting service depending on their demographic variables, communication types and sign language interpreting methods? Second, what would be the effective strategies supporting the sign language interpreting service for deaf college students' adaptation to the school life? For this study, the researcher sampled 110 deaf college students who were receiving the sign language interpreting service or who had received the service at Korea Nazarene University or Korea National College of Rehabilitation & Welfare. For the period from September 21 through October 16, 2009, the researcher asked the institutions to survey their students with a questionnaire designed by the researcher, while visiting the graduates personally for the survey. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; First, satisfaction with the sign language interpreting service did not significantly differ depending on such demographic variables as gender, academic background, hearing aid, artificial snail tube surgery, degree of inaudibility and rating of handicap and level of reading comprehension. Merely, those who had lost audibility at the age of 3 or older were more satisfied with the sign language interpreting service in terms of 'familiarity with sign language interpreters' than those who had lost audibility at the age of younger than 3. Second, satisfaction with the sign language interpreting service did not significantly differ depending on primary communication methods or whether other family members were using the sign language or not. However, satisfaction with the sign language interpreting service differed significantly in terms of morality and familiarity with sign language interpreters depending on the periods during which the subjects had learned the sign language interpreting service. In both therms, those in their 20's were more satisfied than those in their teens or younger. Third, as a result of analyzing the differences of satisfaction depending on demographic variables, communication types and interpretation methods, it was found that the earlier the subjects had learned the sign language, the factors were more influential, and that those with the lower the level of reading comprehension, or those with other family members using the sign language or those who had not undergone the artificial snail tube surgery were less satisfied. 'The transmission and receipt model' was an influential variable, though not significant. Summing up, the effective strategies supporting the sign language interpreting service for the deaf college students should take into consideration the period during which they learned the sign language, the family members using the sign language, the level of reading comprehension, the artificial snail tube surgery, etc., while respecting the deaf college students, keeping the service time, and maintaining a kind and close relationship of trust and thus, should provide for the sign language interpreting service based on 'the transmission and receipt interpretation model' which is deemed potential in the educational sign language interpreting situation. The implications of this study are summed up as follows; First, deaf children should be given opportunities to have auditory training and linguistic education as well as learn the sign language for communication and academic achievement, while their family members should be encouraged to learn the sign language for their communication with their deaf children. Second, the sign language interpretation method most affecting deaf college students' satisfaction with the sign language interpretation services is 'the transmission/receipt model' centered about 'substitution between words', delivering the contents of teacher's instruction intact to the students. However, other diverse sign language interpretation models exist, and therefore, sign language interpreters are obliged to make efforts for their self-development to provide for customized interpretation services. This study is limited in that it could not well control deaf college students' demographic variables such as damaged parts of the auditory organ, linguistic competence and accommodation and expression of the sign language. In addition, since this study could not take into consideration the specific factors of the sign language interpretation services of the school and could not control the variables regarding scope and methods of the sign language interpretation as well as the sign language interpretation subjects, the information crossing the variables might not be sufficient. The suggestions are put forwards as follows. First, we should be aware of deaf students' rights to learn and choose. Second, colleges are obliged to provide the deaf students with every possible learning support service. Third, region-wise sign language interpretation centers need to be expanded and reorganized.
