This study was conducted to examine the effect of MBL programs on elementary school students' academic achievement, scientific inquiry skills, and science related attitudes, as well as to understand students' and a teacher's perception toward science classes using MBL programs. Students' verbal interactions in MBL science class were also compared with those in traditional science class. The subject of this study was sixty four 4th grade students from two classes. The experimental group engaged in science classes that applied MBL and the control group engaged in traditional science classes based on the textbook and experiment workbook. Aademic achievement, scientific inquiry skills, and science related attitudes, and learning motivation were examined before and after conducting this study. To examine students' verbal interactions in science classes using MBL and in traditional science classes, experiment activities in three small groups were recorded and videotaped to be transcribed for a qualitative analysis. Also, students and a teacher were surveyed and interviewed to understand their perception toward science classes using MBL. In result, there was no significant difference in academic achievement, but scientific inquiry skills were significantly higher for the experiment group compared to the control group. The average score of science related attitudes was also higher for the experiment group, but there was no statistical difference. In result of examining subfactors, however, scores for students' interests in science and criticism were significantly higher for the experiment group. Learning motivation was also significantly higher in experimental group. In result of surveying students' perception toward science classes with MBL after conducting this study, students showed positive perceptions in aspects of interests, comprehension and convenience. There was no difference in perception according to gender, but there were differences in subfactors and overall perception according to students' attitudes toward science and computers. In result of interviewing students and a teacher about science classes using MBL, many of them responded that the new experiment tools were not only fun and interesting, but also convenient and comprehensible as they could observe subtle changes in temperature. they were also positive about the continued use of MBL in science classes. In terms of students' verbal interactions, the control group that engaged in traditional science classes spent a lot of time measuring data and discussing the results of measurements, whereas the experiment group that engaged in science classes with MBL were encouraged to think critically to ask questions about numerical data of temperatures and interactively analyze and apply the causes of phenomena. These findings indicate that science classes with MBL have positive influences on students' learning and interactions.
