This study is to compare, receiving lunch benefit, the level of physical development through body measurement, eating behavior, life style, exercise behavior, factors of stress, and responding behavior of non-subsidized children and subsidized children, and to compare their impact on self-esteem. This study is based on both body measurements performed on 229 of 4th, 5th and 6th grade students in May 2009, and questionaries distributed to and collected from them in June 2009, at a S-elementary school, which is designated as a education-welfare-investment school, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The investigative items include general circumstances, living circumstances, eating habits, life styles, exercise habits, sense of self-esteem, stress factors, and ways of relieving stress. Non-subsidized children had higher level of economic capacityand owning homes than subsidized children(p<0.001). The same applied to owning his/her own room. Non-subsidized children had more tendency of living with family members and their relationship with family members is closer(p<0.001). RI, the body integrity indicator of subsidized was much higher, indicating that they were more obese(p<0.05). Non-subsidized children had better eating habits. Subsidized children had more snacks, especially high calory food including instant food. Non-subsidized children had better living habits. Subsidized children was likely to buy food when money was available and had bad life styles including eating lying down(p<0.05). The level of stress was higher on the side of non-subsidized children but did not show any meaningful difference. When it comes to responding behavior, subsidized children relieved their stress by eating food at stress vendors such as cookies, chocolate, dried squids. Non-subsidized children had higher level of self-esteem(p<0.01). This was noticeable, especially in class, presentation, popularity among friends, responsibility, and sense of his/her importance in the world.
