Packaging color design performs a complementary role with each of the marketing factors as a means to facilitate product sales. Especially for product families accompanying a great varying product turnover rate and relying on fashion, color plays an important role to affect product sales. As an important part of marketing processes, color should be able to transmit product images effectively in directly meeting consumers, give strong impressions in visual and sensual ways when consumers see packaging designs, and should have absorbing power to make consumers buy the products. Though ramen(instant noodles) sold in Korea employs various colors right now, there is hardly a differentiating factor among different brands and an overuse of colors confuse only seems to confuse consumers. That is because companies are not making use of color plans properly as they have not realized the importance of color. There have been great advances in ramen becoming the second most important primary foods for the Korean nation after rice due to its ease of cooking and relatively low cost since it was first introduced about 40 years ago to South Korea. However, we are now living in an era flooded with excessive communication technologies of various sources due to the development of various media in the global modern society. Therefore, differentiation of packing design and more aggressive brand image building for more active appealing in such an overload of communications are now necessary. Sinramyun of Nongshim Co. with 25% of South Korean ramen market share easily shows such research results that colors in packaging design for domestic ramyun market greatly affect psychological aspects for consumers. Also, Hanguk Yagurt is looking for a new breakthrough with Tumsaeramyun based on a packaging design using colors combining stronger red color in a black color. Furthermore, CJ Jeiljedang employs intensive red colors while Ottogi tends to employ yellow colors to give lighter and more positive images. On the other hand, Pulmuwon employs a color marketing based on light green colors as its strategy is to be recognized as a company dedicated to producing more "environment-friendly" food products. However, as Nongshin, Hanguk Yogurt, and CJ Jeiljedang all are using red color-based color marketing strategies, their differentiating factors are mutually being cancelled off. Though ramen products being sold in South Korea are using a variety of colors, there is hardly any unique color among different brand products and overused colors are merely giving confusion to consumers. That is because companies are not making use of color plans properly as they have not realized the importance of color. There is an increasing need for more careful color marketing based on colors to help to facilitate the consistency in the logos, products, shops, and advertising for producers. That is because they help to maximize profitability for products as they become great communication tools to help to increase buying activities for consumers. Therefore, packaging designs and brands enable products to have longer effective lives in today's market situations to play an important role in corporate marketing activities.
From such points of view, this study aims to analyze colors used in packaging designs and brands of ramen products and the summary of the comprehensive analysis results is as the following. First, satisfaction of corporation brand images seemed to help to increase consumer preferences in relation to satisfaction of ramen brand images. Among the satisfaction results of different ramen producers, Nongshim showed much higher satisfaction results than the other competing makers in brand, reliability, packaging design, quality, and services. The results showed they strongly affect product preferences as well. The efforts to enhance corporate images, or brands based on the unification of colors and symbolic values implied in company logos seem to affect the outcomes of marketing strategies of brand image integration plans. Second, women seemed to have higher interest in the importance of packaging designs when judging corporation brand and reliability in the general analysis of ramen than men as the research results showed 2.16 average scores for men and 2.66 average scores for women for the importance of packaging design, and 2.84 for men and 3.09 for women in corporation brands and reliability. That indicates the effect will result higher when corporations establish marketing strategies for ramen sales based on concepts more oriented for female consumers. Third, packaging design accounted for 53.2% and brand and reliability accounted for 78.49% in the importance of elements for ramen sales. The above analysis results show that consumers regard high of packaging designs and brands when they choose to buy ramen. Based on such results, each ramen producer should try to satisfy consumer desires of varying preferences by establishing more differentiated brand images through a variety of packaging designs, new product development, and quality improvements to express the contents of products effectively. Fourth, at a time of recessions from global financial crisis, consumers of today want to escape from restricting realities through pleasing colors. In a economic recession and depression, consumers that want temporary emotional transitions more strongly prefer rich colors than achromatic colors in general. Even for identical products, changes in colors can help to change consumer perceptions, there is a need to try bold color changes with a transition from fixed conventional marketing thinking. Furthermore, there is a demand to expand exports to other regions than South East Asia. Color perception varies from one country to another while changes in eating customs cannot change in a day. Therefore, food producers should conduct more in-depth efforts to develop new products based on researches on color perceptions of each country. Moreover, food producers should try to keep consistency in product packaging designs, shops, and products through researches on standardization to match traditional Korean food colors to the needs of the modern market requirements.
