The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of a teacher's positive behavior support on the maladjusted behavior of an autistic student and the influence of the mediation of maladjusted behavior through positive behavior support on the social interaction within the class. As there was a mediation request by the parents and the teacher due to extreme maladjusted behavior of an autistic student in the 2nd year of high school program at J special school in Gyeongnam, the subject was a male student of chronological age of 16 years and 4 months old with difficulties in social interactions with those of the same age in class. This study was conducted in a natural classroom environment of a special school for 3 months starting from March 9th, 2009. First, the subject was selected through CARS and Eyberg Children Behavior Test, and in order to obtain an understanding of the function and intention of maladjusted behavior, an interview was conducted using Motivation Assessment Scale of Mark Durand (translated by Kwang-Soon Cho), and the subject student was observed through ABC recording sheet of Bijou, Peterson, and Adult. Based on this, the preference evaluation of the subject student and the functional analysis were executed, and a multi-element positive behavior support plan was established and the positive behavior support mediation was commenced. In order to examine the influence of a teacher's positive behavior support on the maladjusted behavior of an autistic student, maladjusted behavior was divided into self-injury, disturbance, and aggression, and a multi-baseline design across behaviors was used. In order to examine the influence of the mediation of maladjusted behavior through positive behavior support on the social interaction within the class, AB design was used, and through five event records each for before mediation, during mediation, and after mediation, the phase of change in the social interaction between the subject student and other students in the class was observed. The targeted behavior of baseline, mediation, and generalization stages were measured through partial interval record method, and as for the social interaction, 5 event records were made after mediation instead of the generalization stage observation. The results of the study is as follows: Firstly, multi-element positive behavior support in a natural classroom environment of a special school reduced the maladjusted behaviors (self-injury, disturbance, and aggression) of the subject student. Secondly, multi-element positive behavior support in a natural classroom environment of a special school had a great influence on the increase in the social interaction between the subject student and other students in the class. Thirdly, after the completion of positive behavior support, the effect of reduction in maladjusted behavior was generalized for other situations. This study, however, only targeted one single autistic student so that it is difficult to apply the results of this study to all handicapped students, and the fact that the subject student could not be observed over a long period of time due to the scheduling of the study, and not so many alternative behaviors were considered for maladjusted behaviors was a limitation. Also, as for social interaction, the influence of positive behavior support on the increase in the social interaction was verified using AB design, but the chance factor was not precisely controlled, and the fact that the answers from the classmates, directly relating to the social interaction were not included in the social validity analysis is also a limitation. Therefore, in a successive study, in order to allow the handicapped students an improved quality of life at all aspects of life, I wish for an active research in more various environments and areas, and also for the research in the positive behavior support, I hope for an expansion in the number of subjects, application of a variety of evaluation methods, and the development of more systematic measurements and research methods.
