The characteristics of ADHD include deficits in children?s cognition, behaviors, and emotions. Their impulsive, inattentive, and hyperactive behaviors are problematic both personally and socially, because they cause educational and social problems asviolating others?basic human rights, social norms, and rules of the society repeatedly and continuously. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to look for the possibility for sports activities as a treatment for ADHD children by finding out the effects of the sports activities on the characteristics, sociality, and self- esteem of ADHD children through using clinical laboratory tests and applying sports activities to the ADHD children who are collected from clinical laboratory tests. This study was conducted by the researcher at 'S?elementary school in Daegue, Korea and participants of the study, ADHD students were collected who participated in basketball classes for 10months from September, 2008 to June, 2009. In order to collect data for the study, various data collection methods were used : 1) clinical laboratory tests, 2) nonparticipant observation, 3) field notes and recordings, 4) in-depth interviewing, 5) talks with teachers and parents and 6) collecting related documents. The primary statistical analyses involve the methods of case record analysis and inductive categorical analysis. The collected data analysis was verified by member check, consultation with experts, and multiple approaches. The changes in characteristics of ADHD children are as follows: The results of clinical laboratory tests represented most test results changed positively before and after implementing the sports activities and the analysis of the test results supported the qualitative research which could be considered as subjective. First, the result of K-PRC test proves significant differences on an affective scale as well as psychiatric rating scale. It means the sports activities have a great influence on the ADHD children?s behavioral and affective factors. Second, the statistics in the inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive factors on the Attention Deficit Disorder Evaluation Scale?Home Version (ADDES-HV) indicate that whole scores decreased dramatically. The data shows the sports activities have a positive impact on the typical characteristics of ADHD. Third, the significant decrease of the scores on the attention test on Computerized Neuro-Cognitive Function Test System(CNT) shows the ADHD children?s inattentive and impulsive behaviors are improved. Fourth, the increased scores and times of the test with relation to characteristics of ADHD on Hyper-order Cognitive Capacity Test suggest the development of the performance ability according to the growth of division and control ability connected with frontal lobe functioning and the improvement in the attention ability, working memory and attentive cognition. The major results of the study based on the results from the clinical laboratory tests are as follows: First, one of the common characteristics of the attention deficit disorder, the external inattention problem is changed through the attention process while experiencing the sports activities. In addition, the children living in their own world with the internal attention problem turn into the aggressive participants in the sports activities. Second, the hyperactive behaviors of the ADHD children such as unnecessary actions and murmurs which could interfere with othersas well as overacting without consideration for others decrease dramatically due to having a will to control their behaviors. Moreover, they can tell the difference between an unacceptable and acceptable manner in various situations. Third, the impulsive behaviors of the ADHD children become peaceful after they learn how to wait and bear through taking the sports activities and then they begin to control their emotion. As the result, they reduce violent behaviors because they feel the shame of their extreme behaviors. Also, they achieve the effect of behavior modification as reflecting their lives repeatedly. Fourth, after participating in sports activities, they lose certain characters that make them look like outsiders, for example, the lack of responsibility, cooperative spirit, law abiding spirit, independence, and diligence. On the other hand, they develop social skills including a sense of belonging, obeying rules and regulations, making teamwork, cooperating with others, independence, and indulgence. Fifth, with the sports activities, ADHD children can have opportunities to work together and have personal relationships with peer groups. It means the children who have low self-esteem resulted from getting negative feedback from teachers, parents and other children achieve the feeling of success, self-confidence, and high self-esteem after realizing the possibility for success by doing the sports activities. Therefore, those children get over the typical characteristics of ADHD children such as self-justification, the feeling of being victimized, and low self-esteem.
