The purpose of this study to examine the effects of aroma oil inhalation using lavender, peppermint, cmomile Roman and camomile German on nausea․vomiting and pain in patients receiving TACE(Transcatheterarterial chemoembolization).
The research design was a nonequivalent control grough posttest design. 60 patients were being observed in a medical center located in Seoul. They had symptoms of nausea, vomiting and pain while being hospitalized to receive TACE more than 3 times.
The data was collected from October 1, 2008 to August 1, 2009. Among 60 patients 30 were in the experimental group of aroma oil inhalation and the other 30 patients were in the control group without aroma oil inhalation.
The nausea, vomiting degree was measured by Index of Nausea, vomiting (INV). Nausea, vomiting, and retching 3-point range for the 8 to 40 point higher score represents a measure nausea, vomiting, severe enough means. The aroma oil inhalation therapy was begun when the experimental patients were asked to wear a 0.3 cc - filled necklace which contains lavender oil , peppermint oil, camomile Roman oil and camomile German oil mixed in the ratio of 3:1:1:1. Patients were to inhale aroma oil filled necklace when they felt nausea․vomiting and pain during the TACE procedure continuously.
The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 17.0 program using frequency, percentage, χ2-test and t-test.
The results of this study were as follows;
1) TACE and aroma therapy enforcement and control groups received between experimental group nausea, vomiting, degree experimental group(27.90), the control group (38.43) about nausea and vomiting was a significant difference (t = 3.44, p = .0001).
2) TACE and implemented after 24 hours, aroma therapy and the control group received between experimental group nausea, vomiting, degree experimental group (14.43), the control group (20.40), about the nausea and vomiting was a significant difference (t = 3.52, p = 0.0001).
3) TACE and implemented after 48 hours, aroma therapy and the control group received between experimental group nausea, vomiting, degree experimental group (13.47), the control group (18.03), about the nausea and vomiting was a significant difference (t = 2.75, p = 0.0008).
4) TACE to enforce provides aroma therapy, pain between the treatment and control groups received experimental group experimental group (M = 0.60), the control group (M = 0.47) as the number of times of analgesic did not differ significantly (t =- 0.58, p = 0.567).
The result showed that aroma oil inhalation receiving TACE has an effect to reduce nausea․vomiting. So “ aroma therapy ” with lavender, peppermint, camomile Roman and camomile German can be used in nursing intervention and nursing practice.
As a result, in the nursing field or This research could be a very useful nursing intervention for patients reliving nausea and vomiting.
