The purpose of this study is to contemplate the biblical, historical, theological basis for the spiritual growth of ministers, and to propose the development of ministers’ spirituality for church growth by reinvestigating spirituality as minister quality, actual training in the field and practical spirituality.
The definition of ‘spirituality’ is “the state or quality of being dedicated to God, religion, or spiritual things or values.” Spirituality, Christian characteristic, is not something naturally formed inside humans but the image of God accomplished through the work of the Holy Spirit. Also it can be defined as having a personal relationship with God and as the process of becoming like Jesus Christ in our life and character.
The Old Testament understands humans as spiritual beings in a relationship between God and the world. The spirit (ruah) that God had granted to humans is the essence of human life and is continually active in human life since the start of creation.
Spirituality in the New Testament is based on Jesus Christ’s experience of God, and the disciples’ experience of the Resurrection and the descent of the Holy Spirit on the early church. In the baptism of Jesus, the spirit of God descended and lived within Jesus. His preaching and actions were external expressions of his spiritual relationship with God, while his prayers were his internal life. Jesus’ public life and death, and his resurrection were dynamic activity originated from this spiritual relationship and this strength was extended onto the disciples who experienced the Resurrection and the early church.
Spiritual experience continued in early Christianity. Paul who was an immensely spiritual person shows mystical spirituality called ‘Communio Mystica.’ Paul talked about a community where Jesus Christ is the head and the followers make up the body, and the mystical communion in Christ in which the body achieves the divine will of God. Also the mystical communion means living in a relationship with Christ and obeying him in the union in which Christ is the head. The spirituality in the New Testament says that it is not only an internal feeling of communion but also the ability to obey God.
The early church endeavored to defend Christian spirituality from the influence of non-Christian spirituality such as Platonism and Gnosticism. Although it was criticized in the Middle Ages as escapist and secluded, monasticism that rose up in resistance to secularization of the church built up spirituality through seclusion, meditation, labor, frugality, honest poverty, penury, Bible research, prayer, contemplation, silence and worship, and these activities played a large role in the work of heresy repentance, awakening of spiritual leaders, active evangelism, education and translation of the Bible.
The center of the spirituality of reformers was the Bible. Luther dynamically harmonized the subjective and objective sides of faith by saying that the spirit acts through words and words have meaning through the acts of the spirit. Calvin made salvation through the Holy Spirit the aim of spirituality. The spirituality of Protestantism assumes the reformist aspects of being Bible-centered and dependence on the Holy Spirit.
It is urgent in contemporary ministry to establish an accurate understanding of spirituality. Moreover, the spirituality of the minister can be seen to act profoundly on church growth. Ministers need to have not only a strong sense of vocation, but spiritual experiences based on the Bible and experiencing God’s power through obeying His word. And in the scene of ministry, the spirituality applied in worship, healing and Holy Communion will play a large role in the church growing qualitatively and quantitatively.
In Chapter Ⅱ of this study, general spirituality is contemplated and spirituality in the Old and New Testament is examined. Also the flow in the history of spiritualism was examined. It is to prevent the ministers’ spirituality from deviating from the Bible, and to gain wisdom not to repeat past mistakes by reflecting on the historical circumstances. The historical understanding of spirituality was considered through spirituality in the early church, the Middle Ages, during reform, and in the contemporary church.
In Chapter Ⅲ, the ministry scene is examined. And the factor that changes the ministry scene is spirituality. So the relationship between ministry and spirituality in the ministry scene, and how this spirituality is applied was examined. In other words, the definition and substance of the spirituality of the minister, and practical applications in the ministry scene were investigated.
In Chapter Ⅳ, detailed ways to develop spirituality are presented. Also the relationship between the spirituality of the minister and church growth is explored and new aims and methods for spiritual growth are proposed. Finally the paper concludes with a summary and commendation for further research in spirituality and church growth.
Generally, spiritual life is fulfilling God’s assigned tasks as humans made in His image, rather than an abstract religious life. It can be seen not only as cultivating goodness of humanity, but the process of knowing God. That is why it is genuine spirituality to deny oneself, bear one’s cross and live a life following Jesus. Especially the spirituality of the minister plays an immense role in making believers into competent Christians. Furthermore, it will become a standard in establishing genuine churches and producing Christian culture.
