관찰 수업 이전에 영어 학습이 전무하던 B의 발화는 half-routine, full routine, structure-substitution, sentence analysis, language use, meaning-focus, 그리고 semantics over syntax의 특성을 나타냈다.

Children are generally more successful at learning languages than adults. By investigating how they learn English it may be possible to learn strategies to assist adult learners. This study investigates the implications for adult learners of how children learn English by analyzing children's discourse while they learn English. Central to this thesis are three questions. First, do children understand the relationship between conversation and language? Second, what do children prefer between language forms and language functions? Third, do they actively engage in language practice? The progress of three children's English learning was observed in a kindergarten setting. The setting focused not just on English instruction but also on activities done in English. Although there were many observations, the most frequent phenomena were taken as significant results. The results were as follows: 1)Based on their egocentricity, children tried to socialize with their teacher; they wanted to communicate with the teacher in her role as a teacher. 2) The children actively elicited English from the teacher based on personal interests. The children asked the teacher what they wanted to know in Korean and she responded in English. It seemed that the teacher used language forms that she wanted to teach the children, but in reality the children determined the input they received by making the teacher answer the questions that they wanted to know. 3) One child's language developed from routine forms to meaning units. This child, who had had no previous English instruction, showed various forms of language development during the observation. The forms he used in his speech were half-routine, full routine, structure-substitution and language use. All the sentences he used focused on meaning (or meaning-focus). At first this child used English language routines but as he started to analyze the routines into meaning units, his English moved from a focus on semantics to a development of syntactic units. Children communicated with others from their ego-centric positions, and put importance on conversation meaning not language form. Their creative constructions showed a focus on language function rather than language form, while they also practiced using language whenever they had a chance to do so. As learners, children are obviously different from adults in many ways, but the results of this research have some implications for adult learners. Adult learners should focus more on conversation and language functions than language forms and make sure they practice using the language they are learning.
