Currently, colorectal cancer has been rapidly increasing in Korea. Even though colorectal cancer affects significant numbers of individuals, the amount and type of nursing research focused on this particular diagnosis is extremely limited. Experience of colorectal cancer patients, especially experience of self care managements has great significant, because it can be basis of effective nursing care intervention. The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate the experience of self management of individuals who are living with colorectal cancer. Participants involved in this study were four men and six women who ranged in age 44 to 77. Data collection occurred through face to face unstructured interviews from June 2009 to March 2010, which were audiotaped, and then transcribed verbatim. data were analyzed using ethnographic method. The major finding of the study are as follows: Cancer patients confronted a variety of physical, mental, social, and spiritual problems according to trajectory of disease, and made best use of the strategies available to adequately cope with their condition, positive self management, on the other hands, negative self managements were also investigated. Colorectal cancer patients experienced physical symptoms, abdominal pain, hematochezia, weight loss, some patients ignored these symptoms, but some patients knew the fact that something was wrong. The verbal pronouncement of 'cancer' was followed with physician out lining subsequent avenues for treatment. some patients were isolated , bewildered, and depressed, and positive self management were acceptance the diagnosis, and social support, and appreciate the life. post operation period, colorectal cancer patients faced new crisis. Chemotherapy, colostomy, and threat of recurrence and metasis made colorectal cancer patients worn out, confused, shrunk, and depressed. And different self management, such as resting, diet managements, climbing, exercise, and social, emotional, spiritual self management were observed. the patients who had positive self managements were successfully adapt the trajectory of colorectal cancer. Throughout these stories are many examples of the self managements through each phase. It is incumbent on the nurse to explore these positive self managements, and where necessary, to teach other ways to work through the challenges with these people are confronted.
