(The Reality of ...

In this society, we have continuous interests in, and made efforts for, training of actors. Despite of the efforts, when we see the training methods of actors in the modern drama community of Korea, with its history over 100 years it appears that the methods are just listed collectively, but they are not taught systematically. Most of the actor training in Korea has just focused on narrative and scene training, just aiming to achieve a performance. Most dramas that are performed in Korea are based on the format of realism. Therefore, the acting methods based on realism are required to actors. Even though insufficient, a few training institutions in Korea have introduced the system of Constantin Sergeevich Stanislavskii, which is so called the representative form of actor training on the background of realism, and have used it in their training. The Stanislavskii’s system has been established as an actor training program in many countries of the world, and has been improved increasingly by many people. Particularly in the U.S.A., many acting trainers have made the methods accustomed to American cultural climate, and also made the theories of actor training more aesthetical, ethical, and systematical. That is so called the “American Acting Method”. The American Acting Method is the training method which gives the stage the vitality by making actors explore the innate truth and depth of a character and believe the given circumstances of the character as a living and complex being. Lee Strasberg(1901-1982), who was one of the representative acting trainers that used the American Acting Method, trained actors by focusing ‘relaxing of strain’, ‘concentration’, and ‘emotional memory’, on the background of the early system of Stanislavskii. Stella Adler(1901-1992) made her own training method, including ‘imagination’, ‘given circumstances’, and ‘physical actions’, based on the later system of Stanislavskii. Sanford Meisner(1905-1997) made his own acting technique based on ‘Communion’, which values the inter-relationship of actors, though nobody had interests in and considered significantly except Stanislavskii. However, in Korea, just a few methods have been introduced, such as the method of Strasberg and the other theories of just a few teachers. Therefore, this study aims to look into the practical methods for training of acting techniques from the three representative teachers, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, and Sanford Meisner, who were all inspired from the Stanislavskii’s system. Also I, the author, wanted to suggest a new actor training program by reorganizing the techniques of the three teachers above, on the basis of my own experiences of training in the summer of 2008 and the winter of 2009 at the ‘American Acting Method Winter and Summer’, as well as my experiences with drama actors in the field stages and private acting schools. In chapter Ⅱ, how the Stanislavskii system was introduced into America and further developed was explored. In chapter Ⅲ, I looked into the lives of the three persons above, and how they made their own different theoretical methods based on the Stanislavskii system. And also I investigated how their training methods were established as the new acting techniques of American style. In chapter Ⅳ, by referring to my own experiences about the training methods of the three, and my teaching careers in drama companies, schools, and private classes, I suggested the three parts of my method, including “A. Starting from yourself- elements training”, “B. Characters character make - for creating characters”, and “C. True life as a character- scene training”. And I examined the concept, method, and actual cases, of training. In the section of “A. Starting from yourself- elements training”, the concept of the Reality of Doing, which is given priority in Sanford Meisner’s method, is the starting point of teaching. Using his theoretical concept, or the Doing Actually, I suggested the method of making actors aware of not pretending of doing something, listening truly, and multiplying. By the practical training, actors would escape from the self-consciousness that they feel acting. And, by using the method of acting like playing from Strasberg’s relaxing training, I suggested the method to control the body and voice of an actor. And through reproduction of routines used in the studio of Uta Hagen, who is an acting trainer in U.S.A, I suggested the method to let actors start easily as themselves. Second, in the section of “B. Characters character make– for creating characters”, I reorganized the training methods of the three into the communion (direct experiences) technique, imaginary technique, memory technique, and observing technique. And I arranged the methods by the actual cases out of the field of training. Third, in the section of “C. True life as a character”, I examined the 6 methods, so called the chemical response, or the scene practice training, from Sanford Meisner’s approaches. The methods are not usually known at home, but currently used mostly in training actors in U.S.A. However, this study may have its inherent limit from the moment it was written. Most of the acting teachers using the American Acting Methods give the weight on the Strasberg’s method. In Korea, the materials about Adler or Sanford are known just as fragmented, other than Strasberg. The studies about the training methods of the two are meager, but also just a little of their theories and training methods are introduced. Given that the multi levels of studies are absent, studying American Acting Method fell into its innate limit a few times, and exploring new applying methods has been also insufficient due to lack of practical cases from the field of training. I, the author, don’t propose that the American Acting Method is the best training method for actors. I think that actors can accept various training skills and play great performances. I just expect that the various training methods would undergo the courses of practicing(習), breaking(破), and leaving(离), and then be re-created and established as the methods accustomed to us. I hope that this study could help the concept of the American Acting Method to be arranged correctly, which is given many interests, and that the methods suggested here could be utilized importantly and contribute at least a little to teaching of acting as a practical methodology.
