The Effect of Consumer Knowledge and Attitude about Environment-Friendly Agricultural Products on the Purchasing Behavior for Those Products Consumers' interest in safe foods is getting higher with the well-being fad. As the national income and living standards improve these days, consumers focus on quality preferring safer, fresher, organic farming products even though they are more expensive. For this reason, consumers' recognition and preference for environment-friendly agricultural products are on the rise despite their higher prices than those of ordinary agricultural products. This study aims to investigate the effect of housewives' consumer knowledge and attitude about environment-friendly agricultural products on their purchasing behavior. A survey research was conducted on 486 housewives in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s living in Ulsan in February 2010, and the frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis. The research results are as follows: First, most consumers were found to have ordinary consumer knowledge about environment-friendly agricultural products with an average of 5.7 out of 10, and consumer attitude was higher than normal with an average of 9.5 out of 15. Regarding purchasing behavior, purchasing costs were 91,193 won a month in average, and the 'higher-rank' group spending over 110,000 won a month for environment-friendly agricultural products stood at 24.5%. Second, analytical results about the difference in consumer knowledge, consumer attitude and purchasing behavior of housewife consumers about environment-friendly agricultural products according to their socio-demographic characteristics are as follows. When it comes to consumer knowledge about environment-friendly agricultural products, the group of those with college diplomas or higher academic backgrounds, those who live in apartments or detached houses, and those who have children of infants or older were found to have a higher level of consumer knowledge compared to the group of those without college diplomas, those who live in row houses, and those without children respectively. Regarding consumer attitude about environment-friendly agricultural products, housewives in their 50s, with college diplomas or higher academic backgrounds, with their own houses of apartments or detached houses, and with children of college students or older were found to have more positive consumer attitude. Regarding purchasing behavior for environment-friendly agricultural products, house wives in their 40s, with college diplomas or higher academic backgrounds, with a monthly house income of more than 5 million won, those who live in apartments, and those with children of college students or older were found to spend more for environment-friendly agricultural products. Third, the results of investigating influential variables to housewife consumers' purchasing behavior for environment-friendly agricultural products showed that higher consumer knowledge and more positive consumer attitude led to more purchasing of those products. The research results proposes to further educate about and promote the certification system and certification marks in order to raise consumer knowledge about environment-friendly agricultural products of housewife consumers, and requires continuous monitoring and supervision by distributors and the government so that consumers build positive consumer attitude and purchase more environment-friendly agricultural products.
