“I like my family, My mother, This is my family tree"라며 수업 진행 과정 속에서 영어로 말하는 횟수가 많아졌다.

The present study was conducted with 5-year-old children to identify the influence of integrated English-art content(or theme)-based integrated class by the medium of English on young children's cognitive aspects (listening and speaking skills) and on their interest in English learning.
For the purpose of this study, the following issues were set:
Study issue 1. How does English-art content-based integrated class influence 5-year-old children's cognitive domain (listening and speaking skills)?
Study issue 2. How does English-art content-based integrated class influence 5-year-old children's interest in English class?
Subjects for this study were 17 5-year-old children selected in K Daycare Center located in Dongdaimoongu Seoul. In the present study, the effects of English-art content(or theme)-based integrated class on young children's cognitive abilities(listening and speaking) and their interest in English class were examined.
As for the tool to find out young children's cognitive abilities and their interest in English learning, Shin Hye Yeon's(2002) test tool was modified for this study based on ‘assessment of listening and speaking abilities’ and ‘interest in class.’ Each question in the listening test module used in this study consisted of 4 example pictures. In the speaking test, each question was presented with a picture, which the children were asked to speak of. To assess young children's interest in English class, three picture cards with smiling, non-smiling and angry faces were given to children. Then, they were asked to choose one upon listening to 5 question items presented by the investigator. Collected data were statistically analyzed using SPSS/PC+ program. After calculating means and standard deviation between the experimental and the control groups in terms of cognitive domain and interest in class through pre- and post-tests, t-test and paired-t test were conducted to determine any significant differences in incremental points.
In sum, the findings in the present study are as follows:
First, the English-art content-based integrated class was found to have significant influence on English listening of participants. Namely, English listening ability improved by checking out instructions given through specific manipulation activity(art activity) that reflected children's own ideas and experiences. Before the experiment, children did not understand even key words in a lesson because of a sense of burden over English-only class. During the experiment, by contrast, participants were observed to be attentive to teacher's instruction and follow the lesson without fail.
Second, the English-art content-based integrated class had significant influence on speaking. That is, children, whose listening abilities improved, said expressions with confidence that they experienced during the course of experiment. They spoke “I like my family. My mother. This is my family tree" more frequently during the experimental class.
Third, realistic visual and perceptual experience activity(art activity) and meaningful integration of English into class enhanced young children's level of understanding and abilities in English class.
Conclusively, through diverse art activities considering children's developmental process, children encountered, used and experienced target language(English) naturally in person in the content-based integrated class, which was effective in enhancing their English listening and speaking abilities. In addition, it was also found that children's interest in English class increased through art.
