The study of relationship between heroic and anti-heroic property of SFX characters -with emphasis on series- Kim Hyun A Department of Cultural Contents Graduate School Hankuk University of Foreign Studies The goal of this study lies on finding distinct features of modern heroes through an analysis of their heroic and anti-heroic properties. This study especially takes note of 'Kamen Rider' series, which is one of Japanese commercial contents, SFX. Since the series is thoroughly commercial contents, and aims at children, the individual characteristics of heroes are clearly revealed. Desire for hero and identification is the consciousness established since the very beginning of the mythology. Therefore, the heroes and the forms of heroic mythology are considered as a character group or a plot, which has certain frame in society. All contents that we know are being made through steady transformation of plots and characters in heroic tales. However, the heroic figure altered from the character with capability or personality that people respect for, to an ordinary person itself. The character taking the core in a play should be able to be found in reality which consumers belong to, because of the absorbance. So, the individual characters are given reality and, at the same time, all sorts of anti-heroic properties, according to the reality. Heroic figure and the frame of the heroic mythology are diversely transformed, and then, anti-hero and anti-heroic mythology become the new form of epic. The anti-heroic properties become more apparent through identification of characters' images in heroic contents taking the development of the heroic tales directly. The storytelling of series corresponds to the form of heroic mythology. However, all sorts of anti-heroic and anti-mythic traces appear in the development of characters and story. Synthetically, we can verify that there is balance between heroic plot and anti-heroic character in . Therefore, anti-hero is not a complete confrontation of hero, but it is actually based on it; the balance between this two elements makes the work's individuality distinct. Heroic mythology is the original story form that is deeply rooted in human mind. This study tries to confirm these heroic mythology and figures, and at the same time, to give the consideration about anti-mythology and anti-heroic properties. Furthermore, the study forecasts that hero and anti-hero are making balance in many ways, and through this continuous balance, more abundant storytelling can be accomplished in the future. I hope this study will be of help to the research for the new type of characters in commercial contents and creating a fresh storytelling and characters which are suitable for modern people.
