From the beginning to walk upright to the birth of civilization, human beings have always maintained the fear and respect toward the nature. Thus human beings have worshiped the natural elements such as sun and moon, fire, water, tree, rock and stone and so on for getting the ability of reaching their aspirations in the hands of fetishes, and believed they might give us happiness, health and fortunes. The fetishes have been believed as the elements of nature acknowledged from the long experience of living, but they could not be completely explained with science contrary being used at the indigenous cultures. Specially constructing the rockscape in the garden was world widely culture, but it was denied at the Western after the birth of Monotheism contrary keeping the ancient culture continuously at the Eastern. In ancient Chinese cultures, Tai, Heavenly Stone, Boulder were respected as media of communication between human beings and gods; most of the fairy tale like the Nuwa, Amah, Haikushilan for the strength, life, rich, lucky symbol at the large number of literatures such as , embodiment of wit and courage, Monkey King that has been described as born from stone. Thus the Chinese has thought of the stone as a dignified and spiritual one which is the product between heaven and earth. In traditional Chinese gardens, we can see a lot of rockscapes. It was used not only for ornamental but also symbolic. The standard of choosing the stone for gardening is thin, penetration, leakage, wrinkle and so on. It is also through the making rockery to enhance the garden’s sense of space and depth of feeling, at the same time expressing the garden’s personality, and the spirit of their respective owners. In addition, stone implies the energy of Earth and people put it in his home and garden to wish better hope come true. In this paper, the evidences of using stones and rocks not only for ornamental but also symbolic will be presented from the ancient literatures and old garden to modern. Chinese traditional cultures are worldly respected ones, but Chinese are apt to disdain their cultures and hang on the Western. Developing the Chinese unique theory and technology in landscape design might seek from traditional cultures, not from imitation of the Western.
