The purpose of this study is to analyze prevalence of constipation in students who prepare for the college entrance exam, related life habits, perception of constipation, and nutrition knowledge, and to present basic data for nutrition education for preventing constipation. The subjects were 754 students in four high schools located in Daegu (333 were males and 421 were females), and self-reported questionnaire was used. The investigation included general characteristics, bowel habits, life habits, eating habits, intake of dietary fiber, perception on constipation, and nutrition knowledge of the subjects. The intake of dietary fiber was investigated by semiquantitative questionnaire for frequency of food intake. The results of comparison of eating habits, perception on constipation, and level of nutrition knowledge between the normal group and the constipation group are as follows. First, the constipation prevalence based on criteria for constipation of the subjects was 22.6%: the prevalence of the female students was higher than that of the males. The constipation group was lower in mean BMI when compared to the normal group. Second, as for bowel characteristics, the constipation group showed significant differences in bowel regularity, frequency, amount, and feeling of fecal retention after defecation. Third, as for bowel habits, the constipation group showed significant differences in reaction to defecation feeling, fecal time, abdominal pain, uncomfortableness after defecation, and fecal forms when compared to those of the normal group. Fourth, as for life habits, the constipation group was significantly lower in regularity in daily life and in sleep time when compared to the normal group, but no differences were found in sleeping and learning hours. Fifth, as for exercise habits and attitude, the constipation group was significantly lower in activeness of physical activities, and showed significant differences in frequency of exercise (per week), time of exercise (one time), methods of attending school, and contents of leisure activities, when compared to the normal group. Sixth, as for eating habits, the constipation group was significantly higher in rates of meat-centered meals, irregularity in eating time, non-eating of breakfast, and unbalanced diet but significantly lower in water intake. Perception in their own undesirable eating attitudes was significantly lower in the constipation group. Seventh, as for intake of dietary fiber, the constipation group was significantly lower when compared to the normal group. There were significant differences in fiber intakes from the food groups including grains, soups, vegetables, and seaweeds between the two groups. Eighth, perception on constipation was significantly higher in the constipation group than in the normal group, but no significant difference was found in nutrition knowledge related to constipation between the two groups. Conclusively, factors related to constipation prevalence of students who prepare for the college entrance exam included low BMI, irregular bowel habits and life habits, insufficient exercise, methods of attending school and leisure activities, non-eating of breakfast, meat-centered meals, unbalanced diet, insufficient intake of water, undesirable eating attitudes, and insufficient intake of dietary fiber. Thus, measures for systematic life and nutrition education based on the basic data on factors of life and eating habits related to constipation prevalence presented by this study need to be established in the future, in order to prevent constipation of students who prepare for the college entrance exam.
