The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the emotional quotient(EQ) and social characteristics in elementary school students. Two psychological factors were very important to understand children's emotional health, including interpersonal relations, personality, behaviors, attitude and sociol development. Ultimately this study was attempt to be of use for the development of various school guidance and counseling programs in elementary school to help improve education for students, parents and teachers. The subjects in this study were children in their fifth and sixth grade in elementary school, at Kangwon Province. A survey research was conducted with a series of questionnaires that included three different variables(sex, grade, local) to objectively assess EQ & social characteristics. After statistical data on mean and standard deviation were obtained, t-test was implemented to track correlational relationship. The findings of the study were as follows: First, in terms of sex, the difference of emotional quotient between boys and girls were statistically very wide significant, but in terms of local, home environment, and school achievement, it was not statistically significant. Secondly, there was significant difference of social characteristics in terms of local, home environment, and school achievement variables. Thirdly, the relationship between the emotional quotient and social characteristics was much close interrelated. And so, in elementary school it is necessary for children's emotional education program to develop social characteristics. Furthermore we must elaborate for children to have a desirable attitude and behavior of self-awareness, emotional control, optimistic value, and interpersonal relations. The above-mentioned findings suggested that the school teachers and parents should offer to improve the home environment and school climates in various ways for sound development of children. Therefore, it is necessary to promote social campaigns and educational movements to construct a good societal, moral, cultural program, which will be used in elementary school. Simultaneously, school staffs should try to develop the guidance and counseling program for children's emotional quotient and social characteristics.
