A case study on Effect of the Emotional Intelligence Through the Peer Reading Picture Books Emotional-Educational Activity원문보기

Nowadays not only many scholars but also the general publics have a great interest in the emotional intelligence. It can be supported by the fact that plenty of books about emotion or feeling have been poured out for the recent years. These days due to the excessive admission competition, the egocentrism of the students has been exacerbated, while it becomes harder to get the opportunity experiencing interaction with others and emotional exchanges, hence mal-adjustmental problems are continuously appeared in this educational environment. In this situation, the need for emotional education such as the capability of self-awareness and self-expression, children's empathic ability, emotion control, appropriate self expression relevant with other people's situation is rapidly increased with an object of improving emotional intelligence and the associated researches have been constantly studied. Simply put, our society, from the scholars to the general public, is focusing on the emotional intelligence or EQ as the key to live a happy and successful life. As Christian worldview, God describes him as existence with anger, sadness, joy and also other feelings and he created man with his image and made him become to know God not only through cognitive perception but also through the various emotional experiences. Most importantly man was created in order to live a healthy communal life through the mature relationship with other people. Therefore emotional education is also greatly needed in the Christian education to improve the emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of 'peer reading activity' as one of the emotional-educational program to extend the emotional intelligence on the improvement of the children's emotional intelligence by recognizing and expressing their own emotions, showing empathy with others, and reacting to each other. To verify this question, two classes of second grade in S elementary school were selected and designated as experimental group and control group and a pre-test for motional intelligence was given to both groups. 12 sessions of 'peer reading activity' were followed three times a week for 4 weeks, and 5 sessions of post-activity were conducted with the teacher. After the end of the program, to assess the effect of the program, contents were analyzed by students' opinion documents, surveys to students' parents and teacher's observation. The results of this study were as follows; First, t-test showed that there was no statistical difference between the experimental group and the control group on pretest and posttest. Statistically, it can be said that the intervention conducted between the pretest and the posttest failed to create the significant differences. Second, via analysis using the paired test, the differences between pretest and posttest were found. In the control group, differences between the pretest and posttest were found in the emotion expression area and total score, while in experimental group, the differences were found in more various areas such as emotion expression area, total score and cognition of other's emotion and self-emotion control as well. This result shows that statistically the intervention, which was conducted between pretest and posttest, caused more changes to the experimental group than to the control group. In other words, there was no significant statistic difference between two groups in post test, but when we focused on the differences between pretest and posttest, more changes related with analytical area were found in the experimental group than the control group. Supplement for analyzed result of student's opinion documents were conducted using post-survey from the children and their parents and teacher's observation and its results were as follows; First, near 70% of children showed the satisfaction on the interplay of peer group and almost half of them answered that they were satisfied with reading to peer group and listening from their peer group. It can be said that they positively react on expressing their emotions and recognizing other's emotion via not only emotion-probing activity of the characters in the book but also peer group interplay. Second, peer reading activity had an effect on improving the contents of the emotional intelligence. It can be supported through that most children answered they could understand the character's emotion through the peer reading activity, and learned how to share their emotional experiences with their peer group and how to express various emotions. Third, the survey of students' parents and teacher's observation showed that peer group activity had a positive influence on those who were passive and introverted in expressing their emotions. The results of this study were follows. Emotional education program, which was conducted to second grade of elementary students, statistically showed no prominent differences through the average-centered analyzing method of the students' change but most children had positive reaction on the program and it brought the significant changes in the area of recognizing the emotion of the self and the others and of controlling the emotion. Therefore this study has an educational significance in the point of suggesting the guidelines that both teachers and students can utilize easily by associating it with the related curriculum or by using the discretional time through providing and applying peer reading activity program in practical limitation of learning environment with the large-sized class. Furthermore, through this activity children can improve their emotional intelligence by experiencing the character's emotion directly and indirectly and also having the chances to share with their friends, which can contribute to formation of good fellowship and community.
