This study aims at understanding how play instruction efficacy is revealed in play guidance through in-depth exploration of play guidance according to the degree of early childhood teachers' play instruction efficacy in the context of free-play time. In order to understand and explain the characteristics of play guidance according to play instruction efficacy of early childhood teachers, research topics were set like followings below. First, how is the play guidance aspect of an early childhood teacher having higher play instruction efficacy? Second, how is the play guidance aspect of an early childhood teacher having lower play instruction efficacy? Participants selection of this study was done through 2 steps. In the first step, it inspected play instruction efficacy of early childhood teachers using a research tool developed by Shin Eun-Su, Yu Young-Ui, Park Hyeon-Kyeong(2004). From about the middle of April to the middle of May, questionnaires on play instruction efficacy for early childhood teachers were distributed to 120 teachers taking charge of 4 and 5-year-olds at Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do by mail, E-mail or in person. As the result, 98 copies were collected but 87 copies were used for analysis excepting 11 of false entries. In the second step, for in-depth analysis of participants' play guidance according to play instruction efficacy, 4 teachers in the 15% of top․bottom, 2 men each were selected among teachers who replied to the questionnaires based on the score of play instruction efficacy. From 22nd, June to 10th, September, for 4 teachers selected as the research participants, observation was done in the free-play time through 40 times, 10 times per one teacher with interviews. For data collection, brief field sketch, videotaping, recording and documentation were conducted. And for data analysis, participant observation journals, interview records and related documents were classified, organized and categorized. The main results of this study are like followings below. First, it showed that teachers having higher play instruction efficacy performed play guidance through play planning centered on young children, observation for proper play support and intervention to encourage play. Teachers having higher play instruction efficacy provided young children with regular play time in order that they might plan stable play and reflected their interests and needs on play activities. In addition, teachers reflected information on young children on the next play activity plan, and observed their play as the exploration for deciding proper time and method of intervention in young children's play. Also they induced young children-centered play, reacted well to play and interacted with children in the play activities. Second, it showed that teachers having lower play instruction efficacy intervened in play planning centered on teachers, play observation for safety management and play itself obligatorily. Teachers having lower play instruction efficacy provided young children with irregular play time through adjusting it according to the situation. And they performed play activities under their planning while neglecting opinions that young children's interests and needs are reflected. They also pointed out young children's mistaken use of play materials or observed them for safety management in the dangerous situations. Furthermore, in the play situation of young children, they directed or took the lead of play having control and used linguistic expressions to control children's play behaviors. They also acted things unrelated to young children's play including daily talking with children or preparing for the next course work.
